Valparaiso, Santiago and... time to go back home

Queridos todos,

Se acabo lo que se daba. Ayer estuvimos en Valparaiso subiendo y bajando cerros y visitamos la casa de Neruda, La Sebastiana. Hoy nos subimos al autobus panoramico (lleno de giris) para darnos una vuelta por Santiago. Ahora ya estamos en el aeropuerto para volvernos a Zurich. Asi que ahora que se acaba el viaje estamos encantados de haber venido a Chile, lo hemos pasado en grande y sin ningun contratiempo, mas bien todo lo contrario. Esperamos que os haya gustado el journal y si no estais ya cansados de fotos...no os preocupeis tenemos muchas mas.

Dear all,

All good things come to an end. We spent the day yesterday going up and down Valparaiso's Cerros and we visisted La Sebastiana, Neruda's home in Valparaiso. Today we took a paranoramic city bus (with all the American turists, no offense, which were "oh so glad somebody else spoke English in this town") to get an overview of Santiago. And now we are back at Santiago's airport for our flight back to Zurich. We are really glad we came to Chile and had a great time, lots of fun, and not a single problem. We hope you enjoyed the journal, and if you are not tired of pictures yet, don't worry we have a lot more to show you at home.

Hola chicos,

Os dejamos con la seleccion de fotos de nuestros dias en Tierra de Fuego, incluyendo el crucero en el Mare Australis. Lo mejor, que el primer dia tuvimos muy buen tiempo y dimos la vuelta al cabo de Hornos (por el mar de Drake), lo peor que el segundo dia hizo malo y nos cancelaron el desembarco a ver el glaciar piloto de cerca. Pero lo pasamos en grande, las caipirinhas de hielo glaciar, estupendas.

Here is the selection from our days in Tierra del Fuego, including the Mare Australis cruise. The best, the first day we had wonderful weather and we navigated around Cape Horn in the Drake sea, the worst, that the second day the weather was bad and they cancelled the trip to see the glacier up close. But we had a great time! glacier ice caipirinhas are the best!

Espectacular Atacama

Hola a todos,

Por fin tenemos un momento para poneros al dia. Acabamos de llegar a Punta Arenas desde Atacama y aun estamos impresionados. Pasamos tres dias geniales en San Pedro de Atacama, con un monton de excursiones y aventuras, incluido rally en el desierto. Lo mejor, las termas de Puritama, el salar de Tara y la puesta de sol en el valle de la luna, pero es dificil escoger porque todo es espectacular. Y ahora, en solo 5h de vuelo pasamos del desierto a los glaciares y a estar a un paso (es un decir) de la Antartida. Mañana tenemos el viaje en bus a Ushuaia (Argentina) que tambien promete, y pasado empezamos el crucero. Hasta la proxima actualizacion. Las fotos estan en la galeria nueva Desierto de Atacama. Por cierto, feliz cumpleaños Dafnuca.

Finally we have some time to put you up to date. We just made it to Punta Arenas from Atacama and it took our breath away. We spent 3 wonderful days in San Pedro de Atacama, with a loadfull of excursions and aventures, including a rally through the dessert. Our picks are the Puritama hotsprings, the Tara saltflat and the sunset at Valle de la luna, but it is hard to choose because everything is just spectacular. And now in just 5h plane trip we went from the dessert to being a "few meters" from Antartica. Tomorrow is our bus trip to Ushuaia (Argentina), which should be great and then the cruise through the fjords. Hope to talk to you soon. Check the pictures in the new gallery !!. And by the way, please join me in congratulating my sister Dafna, today is her birthday!

Pues ya estamos otra vez en el Starbucks del aeropuerto de Santiago. Tampoco es que tengamos mucho tiempo aqui, asi que hay que conformarse. Resumen sobre Concepcion y el congreso:

Las excursiones de Elena:

El salto del Laja: Cataratas en las proximidades de Concepción. Eramos 5 en el grupo de las “esposas”. Es la primera vez que este congreso se celebra fuera de EEUU y parece que no se animaron muchas parejas, asi que eramos 5. Media de edad: 50+-20, la desviacion estandar aumento por mi culpa. Eramos una espanola que vive en Suiza, una de EEUU que vive en Mejico, una australiana que vive en EEUU, una uruguaya que vive en Australia y una rusa que vive que Canada.
Vinedos de Chillan: Fuco dice que estoy escribiendo demasiado, asi que en breve aquí nos empipetamos con todo lo que nos dieron a probar.
Mina de Lota “El chiflon del diablo”: Yo no llamaria a esto una excursion turistica pero por lo menos algunos de los mineros todavia tienen trabajo enseñando como se trabajaba antes en la mina. La zona esta muy deprimida desde que se cerro y da un poco de congojo. Por supuesto la mina la abrio un espanol en 1850 y los tuvo esclavizados hasta la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Se cerro en 1992 y ahora es la zona mas pobre de Chile. Es la unica mina de Chile que esta debajo del mar.
Tambien nos ensenaron el arbol autoctono nacional, la araucaria (ver fotos)

Sobre el congreso tendria que contaros Fuco pero como no tenemos mucho tiempo pues voy a cotillear yo: según parece el Congreso le fue muy bien, se encontro con los chilenos que habia conocido en Canada y el lunes fuimos a cenar con unos y ayer con otros (ver foto de la parrillada chilena). En el banquete todo el mundo lo felicitaba por su presentacion, asi que debe haberlo hecho bien, yo no le vi, porque me estaba tajando en Chillan. Creo que se le acabaron las todas las tarjetas que trajo asi que o ligo muchisimo o la gente estaba interesada en el trabajo. En el 2010 el meeting es en China, asi que hay que empezar a producir datos (aun no empezamos el diario para ese viaje, no mandeis comentarios todavia)

Ahora el siguiente objetivo es el desierto de Atacama, pero no se si tienen starbucks, asi que hay que tener paciencia.

Here we are back at the Starbucks in Santiago airport. We still don't have much time so read slowly so it takes longer. Summary of Concepcion and the Meeting:

First Elena's trips:

El salto del Laja: This is a waterfall just outside Concepción, we were five in the “spouses” group. This is the first time that this meeting happens outside the US and not a lot of couples came. The average age was 50+-20, the high standard deviation being my fault. We were an Spaniard living in Switzerland, an US american living in Mexico, an Australian living in the US, an Uruguayan living in Australia and a Rusian living in Canada
Chillan vineyards: I have to hurry up, so in short, we tried everything they served us.
Lota's mine “El chiflon del diablo” meaning something like the breath of the devil. I wouldn't call this a turist attraction, but at least they are still employing some miners to show how they used to work in the mine. The area is very economically depressed since the mine closed. Of course the mine was onwed by a Spaniard that practically enslaved the workers until the second half of the XX century. It's the only mine in Chile that is under the sea.
We also got to see the national tree, the araucaria

It should be Fuco who told you about the meeting, but I am quite happy gossiping about it. Apparently everything went very well, we met with some of his Chilean friends from Quebec and we went out for dinner with them (check out the parrillada picture). Many people congratulated him during the banquet on his presentation so I am guessing he did a good job (I didn't see his because I was getting slightly drunk in Chillan) and he gave away all his bussiness cards, so he either met a lot of girls or people were interested. In any case in two years the meeting is in China (we haven't started the journal for that one yet).

Our next objective is Atacama desert, but I'm not sure they have a Starbuck, so please be patient :)

Estamos saliendo de Concepcion para volar a Calama. No nos da tiempo de subir mucho rollo a la historia, pero podeis ir mirando las fotos. Como pasamos por Santiago, a ver si desde alli escribimos mas.

Pues resulta que al ser domingo, esta todo cerrado en Concepcion. Nos dimos un paseo y eso, pero de momento nada interesante que contar. Manana empieza el congreso y las excursiones.

It turns out that mostly everything is closed in Concepcion on Sundays. Went for a walk and looked around but nothing much to report yet. Tomorrow the meeting starts and Elena goes on a trip to wineries.

Ya llegamos a Santiago!!! y sin ninguna incidencia, mas bien todo lo contrario, Lan Chile funciona de maravilla y estamos encantados en el...Starbucks (!!!) del aeropuerto. En 20 min salimos para Concepcion, y ya tenemos restaurante fichado para cenar: Restaurante Polleria, el mejor aji de gallina de Concepcion...

We made it to Santiago with no problems, quite the opposite, Lan Chile works like wonders and we are chilling out in the...Starbucks (!!!) at the airport. In 20 min we leave for Concepcion, where we have already pick out a restaurant for dinner: Polleria Restaurante, its aji de gallina is to dye for, according to the guide...

Manana empieza nuestro viaje a Chile!!!

Salimos de Winterthur a eso de las 6pm, y tras una parada en Madrid, nos esperan 14 horas de vuelo hasta Santiago de Chile. Una vez en Santiago, aun tenemos otro vuelo hasta llegar a Concepcion.

Aqui os queda nuestro itinerario completo:

8 Nov: Zurich-Madrid-Santiago-Concepcion. Llegamos a Concepcion el 9 Nov.

9 Nov - 12 Nov: Concepcion, SWST Meeting. Elena se va de parranda mientras Fuco presenta en el congreso.

12 Nov - 17 Nov: San Pedro de Atacama. 3 dias para ver el desierto de Atacama. Los geisers del Tatio y el valle de la luna.

17 Nov: Punta Arenas

18 Nov: 12 horas de autobus de Punta Arenas a Ushuaia (Argentina)

19 Nov - 22 Nov: Crucero de Ushuaia a Punta Arenas. Glaciares, el estrecho de Magallanes y el cabo de Hornos. Pingüinos, muchos pingüinos. www.australis.com

22 Nov: Volvemos a Santiago desde Punta Arenas

23 Nov: Valparaiso

24 Nov: Santiago de Chile. Tenemos medio dia para dar una vuelta por Santiago y por la tarde al aeropuerto. Otras 14 horas de vuelta a Madrid y el 25 estaremos durmiendo en Zurich.

Tomorrow is the big day!!!

We leave Winterthur at about 6 pm and have to do a stopover in Madrid. Then we take the redeye flight to Santiago de Chile (14 h). Once in Santiago we still need to fly to Concepcion, our final destination.

This is the full itinerary for the whole trip:

8 Nov: Zurich-Madrid-Santiago-Concepcion. We arrive in Concepcion on 9 Nov.

9 Nov - 12 Nov: Concepcion, SWST Meeting. Elena checks out the local "sights" while Fuco keeps busy in the meeting.

12 Nov - 17 Nov: San Pedro de Atacama. 3 days for the Atacama desert, the geisers at el Tatio and el valle de la luna.

17 Nov: Punta Arenas

18 Nov: 12 h bus trip from Punta Arenas to Ushuaia (Argentina)

19 Nov - 22 Nov: Cruise from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas. Glaciers, Magallanes strait and around Cape Horn (weather permiting). Penguins, lots of penguins. This to make you jealous: www.australis.com

22 Nov: Back to Santiago from Punta Arenas

23 Nov: Valparaiso. Just a hint, it has paradise in the name

24 Nov: Santiago de Chile. We have half a day to hang around Santiago and then head to the airport. Another 14h on the plane to madrid, and we'll sleep at home in Zürich.
