Motorcycle Across America

Iowa Rides

USA | Monday, 11 May 2015 | Views [150] | Scholarship Entry

Bikers have a lot to share. They look at the world through wind-swept goggles and car-cursing stories. In the last year, I've changed careers, received my motorcycle license, and taken steps every day to become a teacher. I was a lawyer before (I know. It doesn't make sense, unless you know me.). My current rides have taken me all over central Iowa. If that doesn't sound compelling enough, you don't have to convince me. I want to see so much more of my nation.

As limited as my current biking experience is, I've learned that bikers are intriguing people. They exist in niche markets. Harley riders, BMW folks, Honda Goldwing riders (Wing-dingers, as I've heard them called). All of them, though, know that American road trips are rare experiences that are unique in American travel. Space is one of the defining characteristics of our country, and I want to share that space with my readers. And students.

I want to get tattoos. I want to meet bikers. I want to lose myself among new people. I want to see North Dakotan oil fields, biker rallies in Utah or Montana, apple orchards in Michigan, and I want to curse the traffic in Manhattan. Life will be good on my grandpa's 1973 BMW motorcycle, which I'll be using to get to know the people of my country.

Give me this chance! Help me become a better writer! Help my students see the benefits and potential of the writer's lifestyle! The power is in your hands to help me change my students' lives and sharpen my writing skills on the sharpening stone of the American interstate system.

Thank you for considering my application.
