"Shift existance...going state to state until I crash into my fate"

*note the Kilometers to Melbourne...hehe

Hello Friends and greetings from sunny Melbourne Australia! Sorry I haven't been able to post this last month. I've been a bit preocupied with moving. Moving??? Yes, you read correctly!

Just when I (and maybe you) thought my crazy adventure couldn’t get much crazier, I decided to experience a different part of Australia, quit my job, and go to seminary. I guess you can say I’m finding myself.

Do you remember the post about Rivka Leah? The musician? Well she convinced me that I just had to go to Melbourne and I just had to go to Merkos Women. (“haha, right” was my first reaction) Yet, my friends seem to have a way of getting me to do awesome things. So after a bunch of convincing, thinking, fighting, writing to a dead guy*, and deciding…I quit my job, packed my stuff and decided to head to Melbourne on an open ended adventure.

Conveniently, my flatmate was also already planning to embark on her own world adventure and I was in need of new accommodation. Also, she decided that a little holiday in Melbourne would be fun. I have 2 words: Road. Trip! Keep reading and you can read about it.

First, here's how I ended my time in Sydney:

For our last morning in Sydney we went to the Sydney Flower Markets. Got up at 4am to be there at the crack of dawn. But we got to watch the sunrise! And get Beautiful flowers!

Here’s a picture from my last lunch in the park:

Also, I forgot to post this picture from the inside of the Great Synagogue. It is right next to my old office:

I said Goodbye to my Boss and POB:

It was really bitter sweet. In 4 (which was effectively 3 because of Tishrei) Months, this man and I built a diamond distribution company from the ground up. I set up all of the accounting, stock flow systems, client contacts etc. After training my replacement, I was astounded to recognize all we accomplished. And we even turned a profit before I left. Such a cool thing to say I did with my life!

Goodbye Home:

Road Trip:

We loaded up the car and on the first day, we drove from Sydney to Narooma (which is the cutest little beach town). We stayed with Raizel’s parents and their 3 Chow Chow dogs. It was beautiful.

(View from her parent's balcony)

The drive was so exciting. I absolutely love the farm land and would LOVE to live there some day. It would be so cool to open my “holiday for health house” idea in some of the places we saw.

I also loved going to the farmer’s market we found:

We enjoyed Raizel’s Family so much, we decided to stay an extra day and just delight in our vacation. We went to Mystery bay outside of Narooma:

Mystery Bay

Turns out, going with the flow is quite fulfilling. I’m actually really glad we did because when we drove through where we were thinking of camping, it wasn’t so great. I loved Narooma!

The second day we drove Narooma to Melbourne. It was an adventure*. We had sunny weather, rainy weather, wind, more sun, more rain.

The diversity of landsape was also neat. We saw flat lands and things that looked like Jungle all in 1 day.

Also exciting, on our way into Melbourne we found our first real highway! Wahoo! All of the other roads we were on were 2 lane winding “highway’s”--although the name is kind of a misnomer.

We got into Melbourne as the sun was setting and it was magical. We walked into our new home and the girls instantly radiated warmth and welcome. They even helped us carry all of our bags up to our second floor room.

…And that is how Raizel and I got to Merkos Women.

Everyone said Melbourne was more artsy and boy were they right! Not even a week of living here and I got to go see a world renowned orchestra.

And they played my all time favorite piece!!! Stravinsky firebird! The bassoon solos in Tchaikov’s 5th were also exceptional. Happy ears :)

and I got to help create a giant mural:

(Art party)

Melbs

Here is what the CBD of Melbourne looks like:

And Here is my new beach:

Totally not as pretty as Sydney, but it’ll have to do. #StKilda

Chanukah

“May it be a season of light and learning”…and so it was. What an amazing holiday. I finally learned the true meaning of Chanukah. I also went to a party everynight. Living in a Jewish area has perks!

I also got to go to the biggest public menorah lighting and Chanukah party I have ever seen. Pretty sure there were a couple thousand people. And there were fireworks! Afterwards I we went to a great Moishe House party put on by some friends.

(#chabad)

(My new friends!)

The girls and I also made special Latkes that I could eat!

So yummy!

And the winner of the award for best use of technology this month...

Lit Menorah with my Grandparents!!! Seriously, don’t know who got more nachas. I love this picture so much!!! I am so grateful that on Thanksgiving I was able to light Chanukkah candles with my beautiful Grandparents. L’dor v’dor!

To wherever my adventure waits…!

*(saving that story for another time. It’s a little much for this forum.)

"I spend my money on the regular miracles"

Hi Grandma and Grandpa (and anyone else who still reads this),

Sorry I have neglected posting for you. This one is gonna be a big one! I have been busy living the everyday normal kind of life and loving it! Honestly living overseas isn't so different from living in the US. I work, I eat, I sleep, see friends, go out, and live life. Then again, it hasn't been all routine:

Sydney Solo Performance #2

Got invited to play as part of an amazing event called Gen3Sydney. Wow! It was a powerful night full of incredible performers. Such an honor to share the stage with amazing talent. It was held at this sweet bar in Surry hills. Also, side note, pro choice bringing my Bassoon. Best carry-on ever! Definitely made some great memories.

Night Noodle Markets

For the month of October, the park across the street from my office got turned into festival grounds. Each night starting at 5, they had asian noodle market stalls. It did remind me of Shanghai. Naturally having such fun right across the street I took advantage. Met up with friends for drinks quite often because park+ Darcy safe hard cider+awesome lights= perfect after work unwind.

Also walked around one night with the Paleo group after one of our meet-ups!

This is how this photo happened:

"everyone look really Paleo"

"Wait..how do we do that?"

"1,2,3:

I'd say that was a success!

7 Bridges Walk

The 2nd official Urban Hikers event was the 7 bridges walk. This was definitely one of the best souviner ideas anyone thought of. Its a 27km walk over 7 bridges that make up Sydney Harbour! Yep, we crossed all 7! It was a fundraiser for the cancer council and happened to take place on the day of my Grandma (who kicked cancer's butt)'s 80th birthday party. So although i'm not such a fan of the cancer council, it was awesome to celebrate in spirit with my Grandma, make awesome memories here in Sydney, and enjoy my Sunday! We also decided to make the numbers of each of the bridges with our bodies. I'm pretty pleased with how these turned out!

#1- Pyrmont Bridge : at Darling Harbour--one of my favorite memories from my first trip here and it was fun to come back. Also check the CBD in the background!

#2- ANZAC Bridge

#3- Iron Cove Bridge

#4-Gladesville Bridge

#5- Tarban Creek- (was so small we didn't realize we crossed it until we got to the Harbour bridge and realized we messed up)

#5 (Which should be 6)- Fig Tree Bridge

#7- The Harbour Bridge :)

Raize and I on the ANZAC Bridge...sunnies and smiles :)

Eat me Primal

One of my Paleo group friends is co-owner of a new company that delivers pre-made paleo meals to people. She needed people to help cook 220 meals. Who doesn't want to cook 220 paleo meals after walking over 7 bridges??? So I walked straight to the kitchen and spent the afternoon chopping and stirring--pumpkin and green beans and cabbage oh my! I was also color coordinated with the food. You can take the husky out of UW but she'll still rep the purple!

Garden

While everyone in the US is playing in their pumpkin patch, i'm playing in my P-Patch:

Greens are growing!

Blues are blue-ing and straws are berry-ing!

... and then there are the casualties.

Afternoon by the pool

and the coolest "grown-up" picnic i've ever seen. I think we felt real mature ;)

Ocean

I often go down to the beach and marvel at the amazing place I have been fortunate enough to call home! Look at this beauty:

Sunset Surprise:

My friend Leora's family threw her a surprise party. After work I headed up north for the celebration. When I got off the train, the station was surounded by a gorgeous sunset. Really the picture doesn't do it justice. As a friend once said, "there is nothing like a sunset in Sydney". and the suprise party was pretty great too! Happy Birthday Leora!

First Time at the Opera House

I finally made it inside part of the Opera House!!! It was a killer night. My friend and I went for the poetry slam grand finals. We were both blown away by the caliber of talent. The power of the spoken word was incredible.

Our best "word." faces:

Food Blog

*warning pictures of stuff I have made*

(Fruit with chocolate "mousse")

(One of the weekly ferments: Fennel Pickles and Kraut)

(Typical Sunday Brunch at the Brondiley Manor)

As a final note, its looking like i'm gonna shift existance here soon. 1 word: Melbourne

...To wherever my adventure waits :D

"and we'll never be royals (royals)"

...but we did enjoy Labor Day Weekend like some! I didn't care that much about the Prince coming to visit, but I did enjoy having 3 days of fun! I mean really, after a month of holidays, who doesn't want another holiday? I felt like royalty.

Wine Tasting:

My roommate and I drove up to Harkham Winery (which is awesome and I reccomend to Sydney people).

By accident we ended up on the coolest street i've ever happened upon:

(Of course we pulled over and took a picture. Next Mission: Darcy Street)

A few hours, some singing to the radio, and some reminiscing about childhood later, we ended up in wine country and it was beautiful!

Then we met our bro Andy. This guy made the whole wine tasting experience incredibly fun. Part comedian, dj, and wine connisuer, he made the afternoon a party. The weather was perfect and the wine was delicious. Not to mention that this stuff is some of the best wine you can find. It comes from a small operation that is all about natural happy wine. You just get the vibe from walking around the place. Also all the wine comes from hand picked grapes, made in small batches, that are preservative free, and most are sulfate free. They also play the grapes music. Yeah. That's some happy wine.

(l'chaim)

Footy:

We got home from the wine country just in time to catch the last 7 game minutes of the big Footy game--the temporary National obsession, much like football during Superbowl Sunday. So we went to our Apartment's party hosted by the Kiwis in unit 6. These guys are so much fun and we always have a good time with them. This night was no exception! What started as a game viewing, ended up becoming a building party that went on into the night--complete with dancing and beer pong. Which, somewhat suprsied to say I became the reigning building champ. #UScollegeEducation...? It was fun to see all the apartments come together and I really got the feeling of the word "mates".

Also, best conversation of the night:

"after the review of a play...

me: was that a touchdown?

guy: no, it was a try

me:well I know they tried, but was it a touchdown

guy:yeah, it's a Try

me: I know, but is it good?

guy: yeah. "

...so apparently when you win points and get the ball in the end zone, it's called a Try. Cultural experiences! But really screaming Tooouuuuccchhhdoooowwwnn! is way more exciting than yelling Trrryyyyy! and yes, please don't remind me that I didn't get to do that very much this weekend either. Still love my Huskies. Go DAWGS!

Urban Hikers: Manly to the Spit

I've made some friends and we hike and stuff. There is a debate on whether we should be called "Jew-burban hikers" or "Urban hikers" but our mission is to find hikes that you can get to from public transport. And if you can't tell from the name, we all have Jewish mommys or know someone in the group who has a Jewish mommy. Well some people have Mums. But still.

We went on a gorgeous hike along the Northern beaches area that ended up being about 16KM in total. Check out the diverse landscape all in 1 hike. All in 1 hike we got to using public transport.

Also we learned that you should be careful who you get to take the group shot. *note the finger where the view should be...

Who doesn't know how to use and iPhone camera?!?! That's ok. It adds to the charm!

Fireworks!

To be honest, I don't think any one really truthfully knows exactly what this whole "Naval fleet review" thing was about. But here goes: Basically a bunch of war ships from nations around The World came into Sydney Harbour for all of 48 hours. The Prince flew in for all of 24 hours. Hands were kissed, babies were shook, I mean...hands were shook, babies were kissed, and boats boated. I guess it was for the Navy's 100th birthday. But all that really mattered was that a bunch of hubub happened for really no reason. But it was ok with me, because there were Fireworks!

Although I don't like the polution and checmicals and yada yada yada, I figure if they are going off anyway, why not enjoy. So a group of us went and watched! Brought some drinks and nuts and had a lovely evening. Then a few of us decided the night was young and we went and walked around the Rocks. Saw the boats lit up at night. Also, took an obligatory bridge picture which, thank you, I did not request. But I do like it!

Food Blog:

If you don't care about the weird things I make and eat, I reccomednd you stop reading now. However, I have decided to do more blogging about my food creations. I'm pretty proud of the yummy things I can make out of only things that: come from the ground, don't contain chemicals, are un-processed, gluten, grain, legume, dairy, egg, and nightshade free so I'm going to post them.

Up first: Dessert. Because I can and they look so pretty.

(Almond nut "resses peanut butter" cups)

Over the last few months i've gotten really into "living foods" and lacto-fermentation. I think bacteria are pretty cool. They make things really yummy. The hardest part is being patient and waiting. My flatmate is amused by the number of things that I leave fermening on our counter tops. This week, co-yo and saurkraut.

The following is part of the feast I made for shabbos with the Posniaks--(the family into which I have most recently been adopted).

I went over early and played in the kitchen with Mama P. As much as I love my 2 butt kitchen, her kitchen was bigger and better. I made a "tex-mex" inspired shabbos menu with cilantro lime culiflower rice, lime chiken, salsas, and guac. For the other meal I made veggies and wine poached chicken. Because Papa P is vegetarian, I made wine poached mushrooms too! Cooking for 7 (and 15) also meant making lots more food than normal. It was so yummy and fun. It was also great to know that everything at the tables was Darcy-Friendly! The Posniaks are so generous to let me cook all the food and subject them to my weirdness. They think its me helping them, but really they helped me have an incredibly relaxing shabbos.

One last pic of the week:

I got on the train to go home one night and this was waiting on the seat for me...

Scariest headline ever! haha

"Bringing heaven down to earth, where the unexpected lies"

Sydney Concert Debut:

(The Beautiful Rivka Leah, Taliah Bloom, and myself)

Rivka Leah was visiting Sydney for a 2 night concert engagement. Along with our great kite flying adventure, we made alot of music and didn't do alot of sleeping. haha! After a night jamming until 2 am I was lucky enough to be invited to join her and Taliah in concert. It was such an honor! The day of the show Taliah flew in from Melbourne and we had a quick rehearsal.

(Practice studio, complete with kids everwhere)

After quickly learning the songs and making up percussion parts, I made my Sydney concert debut! I was introduced as a "multi-talented instrumentalist", which was awesome. The performance was complete with the hand written set list--scribbled down in the green room seconds before we went on.

The second night, Rivka Leah asked me to play a bassoon solo. I still can't believe I actually did it! I got such great feedback and it was honestly the first bassoon solo I have every played without freaking out. I didn't shake, but just shared music. I don't know who I am anymore. Afterwards people wanted to get pictures of me with all the instruments and someone got this. Think I have enough toys?

("[S]he's a what, [s]he's a what? [S]he's a music man!")

Sukkot in St. Ives:

My dear friend Leora invited me to join her family for Sukkot is St. Ives! By the end of the 3 days I was a part of the family. Leora and her sisters truly become my sisters and new family! We had the best 3 days and I shared meals with the most beautiful people. It was the best "vacation" to the North!

This was the beautiful Sukkah:

And my beautiful friend:

Carins:

After a few months of work, it was time for a holiday! My boss closed the office for 4 days, so I called up Karen, we booked the flights, and we went to Carins. It was GORGEOUS! and I got to see summer for the first time in a year. It was in the 80s and sunny the whole time. SUNSHINE!!!!!!! We decided to do the tourist thing and go on a snorkle and dive boat. We got up with the sun and went out to the Great Barrier Reef. It was my first time snorkling and I did not know that things that color actually existed. The water was so clear and the colors were amazing. I also got to go scuba diving for the first time. Not only that, I got to do 2 dives. 1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon. Breathing under water was a dream come true! I got to be a fish!!!!!

(SCUBA!!!!)

The next day, we decided to hire a car and go on an epic road trip. I happen to dislike touristy group travel and love do-it-yourself road trip adventures! I decided that the best way to start the day would be with a bungy jump! Logical, right?

(The Tower)

I had no fear! Got strapped in, shuffled to the end (while singing "everyday i'm shufflin"), and in 5,4,3,2,1 I did a huge jump---back straight, arms out, and screaming with delight!

It was exhilerating and i'm so glad I did it! The freefall was unlike anything I have ever felt. I also got props for my form from the people working there. They were a little shocked it was my first time.

(The after pic! All smiles :) )

We got back in our little red car and hit the road

We drove up the coast to Port Douglas. It was beautful driving up the coast!

We went to Mossman Gorge, the Daintree rain forest, and came back through the table lands. Had more fun driving backwards and we lived!

At a cafe I also saw a guy wearing a U dub hat and had to ask him if it was real. Oh yeah! Spotted another Dawg Down Under! We talked football for a bit and it turns out he is a huge fan of the Band and has met Dr. McDavid. I got them to let me take a picture. Dubs up!

So what does an adventuring kosher paleo girl eat on vaction?

I'm glad you asked! I packed a good snack bag from Sydney with Meat and potatoes (haha) and then bought veg and fruit fresh at the store.

After Scuba, nothing beat a steak "burger". Yep. Kale bun. Dats how I roll.

Also, Note the kosher,gluten-free cider. It was on tap at the hostel bar. First and last time I expect that to happen, but it was a win! My after scuba meal was complete with a drink :)

For lunch I enjoyed picnics that looked like this:

Also, on a completely unrealted note,

I couldn't make a blog post without posting this picture that I saw in the airport bathroom, LOL.

Other Musings:

I'm part of a paleo group and a few of us met up for brunch at my favorite spot, Earth to Table. It's an entire menu of Darcy-friendly food. Yes. Look at those nom noms. I know you want some!

(The lovely ladies)

We had a great time and also discussed our daily routines which was fun. Turns out we all do weird things like oil pulling, yoga, and food fermenting. I also got some great tips for homemade sunscreen, shampoo, conditioner, and deoderant (which I tried out with great skepticism). But actually, they have all been rediculously awesome. I think i'm now entirely chemical free and loving it! I know I am going waaayyyy tree hugger here, but i'm pretty sure you can do everything with baking soda, apple cider vinegar, and coconut oil. Between those 3 things all things are possible. If you are interested, I reccommmend you check out these links :

Homemade sunscreen - http://korduroy.tv/shows/health-nuts/sunburn-basics

Homemade deodorant - http://cavegirleats.com/2011/04/29/the-stank-has-left-the-building/

Baking soda and apple cider vinegar to replace shampoo and conditioner - http://simplemom.net/how-to-clean-your-hair-without-shampoo/

I also just realized I have failed to post about my new project!!!! Garden meet the blog; Blog, Garden. :D

(It was a little overcast on photo day, but it looks beautiful in the sunlight)

Thats right, this is my playground! Name a veg. It's probably in here! Name a fruit, there's a good chance. Lemon trees, tomatoes, capsicums, peas, parsely, carrots, cucumbers, celery, potatoes, zucchini, onions, leeks, spinach, kale, silverbeet, pumpkin, passion fruit, blueberries, and strawberries. The plants are still young and so it will be a while until we have food, but i'll post pictures as it grows. How did I get such a fun new toy? Our Big Kitchen is a non-profit organization and they decided to team up with BJE to plant a garden. That way, the kitchen can use the food to cook with for their programs. While they had a bunch of kids to plant the garden initially, they were looking for a caretaker. I jumped at the chance to have a bunch of dirt to play in and plants to talk to! We had a blast planting and now everyday I get to unwind and watch the sunset, while I walk barefoot and care for the plants.

yes blog, I am officially a tree hugger. and I feel pretty darn ok about it :D

...to wherever my adventure waits!

"yes, I lose myself in you. Yeah, I lose myself in you"

And by you, I mean the momement, the music, and my awesome life! Here are the highlights from the week:

Fat Freddy's Drop Concert 3/9/2013:

I got to see one of my favorite bands live and got lost in the moment for their entire 2.5 hour set! It was an absolutely incredible night. I would say that the first 45min were some of the best live music I have seen. After that, they lost it a little bit. But it was still really good.

Darcy and the Marquee

I was excited for the show, but wouldn't call myself a "die hard" fan. So I decided that I would have a dinner out in the CBD with one of my girlfriends, show up 15 min before show time and just enjoy being part of the crowd. As I walked up to the theater I ran into some friends, by total chance. It turned out that a group of them had been there since the doors opened and had saved a bunch of space--dead center at the front of the floor. They invited me to join and I of course accepted. So this was my view:

Full frontal horns!

Second row. Dead center. Boom.

It was a sold out show too, so the theater was PACKED. I somehow scored the best seats in the house without even trying. It was the center of everything. We had such a good time dancing and singing. I haven't danced with that many strangers or with that much energy in too long! It was so needed!

Panorama

We took this photo 30min in and it pretty much captures what we looked like all night. That is pure joy radiating from our faces. PURE JOY!It was such a good night out!

Quick reflection on some differences I noticed between Seattle shows and this show. First, the show had one warm up set for 30min and then Fat Freddy's played for 2.5 hours. 2.5hours?!?!?! That has to be one of the longest sets I have seen. The cross section of society this band pulled was also interesting. There were 15 year olds and 75 year olds and every age in between. There were business dudes and hippies. Sorostitute types and classy mature ladies. Hadn't seen anything quite like it before and it was hilarious. Also, if you know the type of music this band plays, I expected everyone to be under the influence of something. I felt like if we were in Seattle people would have been in a very different state of mind. However, the majority of people around were sober and enjoying a drink or two. Interesting thing was that they were enjoying them in the theater. There was no deliniation between alcohol zone and "all ages" zone.*Gasp* haha. The picture below captures the floor at the end of the night. Hadn't seen something like that before. But what was cool is that it didn't seem like anyone dropped anything with liquid still in it. Everyone was so nice. Overall, that was the biggest shock--everyone was so nice. People weren't pushing and elbowing and shoving. Even though the place was packed we still had plenty of room to groove. That was great too--everyone was grooving with strangers. It really was a group dance party. I wasn't prepared for all the love but Sydney, you sure know how to host a show.

Post show trash out

Baking for Rosh Hashana:

Peach "cobbler" cooling in the window

Challah and Apple Pies in the oven

Happy 5774! This weekend we rang in the new year and I made some yummies! L'shanna Tova to all of you! May it be a very sweet year! My paleo baking is getting more adventurous and more delicious.

I found my first peaches of the year and decided to try and make a cobbler.

Dear Peaches,

I missed you. Glad we are again aquainted :D

Love,

Darcy

Festival of the Winds:

"Let's go fly a kite..."

Festival of the winds is a kite flying festival at Bondi Beach. It is a one day festival and so I went and spent the afternoon. As you can see below, we had such a good time, we ended up staying until the sunset.

Got a corny Australia flag and had a great day flying it on the beach with my dear friend Rivka Leah!

...to wherever my adventure waits!

"Over the river and through the woods..."

to JS camp we went!

My friends and I literally drover over a river (on a narrow one lane bridge) and through winding woods to go to a place called Crosslands. It seemed like a road trip (so we took an epic road trip picture) but it really was actually quite close to St. Ives. However, it really did feel like we were out in the country. It was so peacful and the pictures kinda capture the complete retreat feeling. Why did we go to such a place??

Crosslands is a camp and for Shabbos, I got invited to be a part of Jewish Studies Camp as a guest Madricha (counselor) for the year 10 kids at Masada. It was a blast! It was such a great experience to be a part of the great “Mad” team. Such amazing Jewish women (and Men). It was great to run around, jump, scream, cheer, and almost lose my voice inspiring the Chanachim! Everyone said that if by some chance I am here next year, I should sign up to do all 3 weeks. Basically, my ladies of the North and I had a great time! Also, it was confirmed we were in Australia when a giant snake (i'm talking diameter like a baseball and longer than I could see the end of) decided to slither into camp. I remained calm. Other people on the other hand... started trying to wash it away/drown it with water and even tried to hit it with a frying pan. Hillarious! Only in Australia, seriously. Point for real Australia experiences, check. Also, making up lost time on Jewish school camp experiences, check. #JScamp

Other adventures from the week:

Walked 4k for a great cause!

Bought a bike. Craigslist special. I’ve always wanted a hipster bike so I got one. ‘nuff said.

Went to the Israeli film festival. Movie was so-so. But my friends and I had a good night out!

Lunch picnics in the park. Love laying on the ground, soaking up the sun, and listening to the fountain. My friend Jenny usually joins me as well!

A few weeks ago Karen helped me score new roller blades for $40. Naturally we had to put them to good use! Nightly roller blading along Bondi Beach. Fresh air, good conversation, and some exercise after sitting most of the day. (and yes Mom, we wear wrist guards, too)

Saw a nice sunset. Thought you should see it too:

and finally, one last story:

Spent Aussie Father’s day (Sept. 1) watching the first UW Game of the year. Thank you technology for allowing my Dad and I to be in the same room and watch a football game together. Creativity at its best! Kickoff was 7pm Saturday, night or Noon on Sunday for us dawgsdownunder. Gotta love facetime and gotta love the Huskies! Dawgs won 38-6. B’Down!

(also, possibly the best father-daughter pic I've seen in a while, haha)

...to wherever my adventure waits!

"Doesn't get much better. No better than this"

Hello Blog Followers,

Sorry to keep those of you who are actually interested in this waiting. I've been busy experiencing life and haven't had time to write about experiencing it. But, i'm making the time now!

Seriously, LOVE does not even begin to describe how I feel about where I am, what I am doing, who I am being, and the people in my life. It seriously does not seem like it could get much better than this. I feel the healthiest, happiest, and most harmonious I have felt in recent memory. I've been “utilizing” my down time at work to read great health blogs and get inspired about living the happiest life I can. And...I am finally learning how to be selfish in a healthy way *insert gasp here*. I've been consciously trying to listen to my body and only do what makes me feel good. And boy do I! Seems obvious, but it’s working.

So now on to what you’ve missed:

Things that have to do with adventures:

One night we went out to a bar and it happened to be an Open mic night. The friends I was with just happened to be incredibly talented musicians. So naturally we had to get up and do a performance. 3 part harmony ensued. It was a blast.

The rabbi and rebbetzin of the community gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. So that meant a bris was in order. There’s nothing like a bris in the morning to start off the day, haha! I got to help get all the other kids ready for the bris, so I got up at 5 and got to watch the sunrise. This was the start to my day:

Didn't mind getting up early because I got to see such a beautiful sunrise!

That night, we had planned an ice skating event and there was no way I was missing that! We went up north to Macquarie Center where they have an indoor ice rink all year round. The idea was to make it feel more like winter and celebrate the cold weather. It was really really really fun! Here are some pictures from our night out at the rink.

All of you who have been wondering, wait what about that whole thing about me loving music??? Don’t worry I’m taking care of my passion and making it a passion again, rather than a job. I found an orchestra to play with!!! We have 2 hour rehearsals once a week. I love the program: Haydn Sinfonia No.103, Schumann's Requium for Mignon, and Honneger's Pastorale d'Ete! They picked great music. I’m actually am really happy with how much I have challenged myself as well. Sight read (and played ) 7 Bassoon solos at our first rehearsal. For those that know my fears of playing solo…getting over those!

Also still taking me time to read at Gertrude and Alice ( which I have affectionately shortened to Gerties)! My latest read is “The Power of Now”. I know, know, I’m jumping on this bandwagon later than most. But better late than never! I highly recommend the book to you all, as well.

I went to my first barbie in the park. Didn’t take pictures of the Barbie. But took pictures of the park. So that’s half of it right?

While I am trying to live in the moment, I had to plan ahead. Got tickets to a music festival that will happen in January. All you really need to know is The Lumineers will be there and I will be there.

The JCA hosted a trivia night. When I got there I bumped into one of my friends who I play trivia with on Mondays and so he had me join his team. It was a hoot! Team “Quizzed in my pants-also known as table 11” took 3rd. More importantly we laughed really hard and I met some great people. 2 questions I actually answered and helped the table with: “what is the top string on a guitar"” and “name 2 tennis courts in Melbourne named after famous Aussie tennis players”. My past life experiences were worth something.haha.

Things that have to do with work:

The fun part about working for a start up is that I have total creative control. Today someone asked my boss, “So how many people does your company currently employ”, he looks, points at me, and says “the princess”. Haha. Guys he means it in a good way. They say it’s because I deserve to be treated like one. When someone asks what I do, the joke is that I am the secretary, receptionist, accountant, interior designer, janitor, and office manager…so basically I rule the company aka. The princess.

One of my favorite days at work was when I got to go on a mission to IKEA for my office décor. Took trains , busses, and walking, and at the end of it the place was just like the USA.

Yay IKEA! I spent hours plotting my office décor plans. Once it was delivered I got to spend a whole day at work just assembling furniture. I inherited an empty room and created this:

Still needs some stuff, but the not so great thing about working for a start-up is the limited capital. All things with time.

Another cool day at work was a day when the weather was super gross, but then this beautiful rainbow happened. It was such a cool sight to see and brightened my day.

Things that have to do with food:

I made chocolate banana “pancakes” which I have to say, one of my more brilliant recipe inventions. I’ve tried lots of fake pancake ideas, but these take the (pan) Cake by far. And they are actually the healthiest version too!

My 50+ challah rolls that were carefully packed from the Steinfelds were almost gone, so it was time to make some Darcy Challah. Raizel’s fiancé Shmuel surprised me and found gluten free oat flour. What a guy! After that I made the best batch of egg and gluten free challah i’ve ever tried. I basically made a really good honey oat bread and then had Raizel help me braid a bunch of loaves. Yummy!

Also, we found the best wine. I don’t know if you can find this in the US, but if you can, I highly recommend you get some. Your taste buds will love you.

One weekend I decided to make my own shabbos dinner. It was so sucsessful it makes me want to always cook. Most people make typical Shabbat food. I just made things I wanted to eat. The afore mentioned challah and wine. Steak. Salads. Blueberries with coconut cream. Oh! And my candle stick is in the picture. So, who wants to come for Shabbos dinner?

Part of my self love happy me mission is that I make green smoothies for breakfast. It helps that my roommate loves them too. Each morning we get out the blender, throw every vegetable we have in it, add seeds, some nuts, and water, and blend. It actually tastes really good. You might have to try it. One of our best creations was when we added mint leaves and raw cacao powder. Mint- chocolate is a great combo. Almost the same color as the grass :p

I have also been making to time to lay on the ground and walk barefoot in the grass. So that means I’ve been having some picnics. Nurturing my soul!

My new favorite place to eat out is the Earth to table restaurant in Bondi Junction. It’s raw, vegan, and gluten free so everything is safe for me to indulge in. And when I say indulge, I mean indulge. Even though it is “healthy”, it is a guilty pleasure kind of place that is perfect for a Sunday morning brunch. Which is exactly what happened last week, Look at my yummy teechino and banana “bread”. It was divine.

Life is pretty awesome! I’m just trying to savor every minute. I Can’t believe 2 months have passed already. It doesn’t really seem possible. Then again, looking back on what I’ve been doing, I guess it does. I’m loving being DarcyDownUnder!

I think that’s the catch up! Also, I don’t think I should wait so long between posts because that was a lot to fit in to one note. If you made it this far, I commend you. If you took a nap along the way, I understand. Also, i'm realizing that i'm not such a great blogger. Good news for me (and you) this isn't my job. Mostly i'm doing it for my Grandparents ( hi Grandma and Grandpa sweetiepie!).

…to wherever my adventure waits : )

"Give to me miles of tall Evergreens, the smell of the ocean, and a cool mountain breeze"

I checked one adventure off the Aussie bucket list--The Blue Mountains!

I had one of the best days I have had in Australia! I was so lucky that a friend that I made used to live in the Blue Mountians and was keen on having an adventure day! I got up with the sunrise and made us some mint tea for the drive and off we went. 90 mins later we were in the mountains!

We stopped in Leura and window shopped along the cute main street. There were great street buskers and it was such sweet way to enjoy a lazy Sunday morning.

(Leura)

Then we went to the Gordon Falls overlook and it reminded me of the sweeping views in the movie "Australia". It was beautiful and somewhat unreal in how amazing it was. I can't believe there is that much beauty so close to the city. The country is gorgeous.

Afterwards we went to Katoomba, Echo Point, and also saw the 3 sisters rock formation.

But, the best part was getting out into the wilderness and getting my hike on! We went to Wentworth Falls for a hike. On the map below we did the red path:

It was a hike from the top to the bottom of the waterfalls which as you can guess was eaiser on the way down than the way up.

To get to the bottom there were a ton of stairs. Some were carved into the mountain, some were metal rings, and 6 looked like this:

It was a pretty vertical plunge and at times alot like rapelling without the ropes.

This picture was taken while I was holding on to a rail on the side of a mountain. (Sorry for the shameless selfie)

Once we got to the bottom of the mountain, the way to the falls was cool and wet. It looked like this:

*note, more steps...haha

This is a view of the falls before going into the trees:

We came from the top of that picture. ANnnnnddd that means that we went back up. It was a great workout going home! Most hikes I have done are where you gain altitude going on the hike and get the easy part coming back. This was the opposite. You actually had to have energy to get home!

So happy and in my element!

At the end this was waiting:

It reminded me of Hanging Lake and the Mother's Day hikes that my mom and I used to do. There was no one around and it was so peaceful.

Ohai Australia.

It was a retreat. For a while I just laid down, listened to the water, and relaxed. We also took some time and davened before we left. Brought some heaven down to heaven on earth :)

I loved the trees and the views.

So now you have all seen some of the real nature of Australia.

On our way home from the hike, Baruch and I were talking about how I had never driven backwards. He just pulls the car over on the side of this country road and tells me to trade places.

My question was "wait! are we doing this? like really?"

Answer: "Yep"

He was cool as a cucumber and so trusting. It was great! He had me drive all over (and not just backroads). I took on a traffic circle, right hand turns, the highway, and even parallel parked! The best part was that the signal and the windshield wiper are on opposite sides of the steering wheel, so for about the first 6 times I tried to turn, I turned on the winshield wipers instead. It was pretty funny! Other than that, it was so much eaiser than I expected.

Huge thanks to Baruch

for being my awesome tour guide, road trip and hiking partner, and brave passenger!

It was the most relaxing way to spend the weekend and see a new part of Australia. I realized that up until then, I had actually only ever been to Sydney, which meant I could only say that I loved Sydney. Now I can say I love Sydney and the Blue mountains. Progress. Glad I got to have my 1st non-Sydney adventure! Hope to have many more soon and to get back to the mountains, as well!

To wherever my adventure waits...

“I don’t where it’s going, but I like it like it is"

I have now lived in Sydney for 5 weeks and in those 5 weeks I feel like I have become a new person. Life seems to have a funny way of taking me places I never thought I would go (*cough Sydney cough*) and having me do things I never thought I would do (see below). I’ve decided to stop trying to plan for the future and instead to really just appreciate all the cool opportunities I discover.

So, If I had to write a new profile explanation here is how Darcy 22.0 would read:

I’m Dassi and I live in Sydney Australia. I work as a Secretary/Administrative assistant for a Jewllery (yes that is how they spell it here) company in the CBD. I like to go to Shiurs in the evening and cook really awesome food. I love to be outside. And I am really happy.

I officially have my first “grown-up” job! Which is fun and exciting. It is not what I thought I would be doing, but as afore mentioned , I’m just going with the opportunity. The music teaching thing just really didn’t happen. Like REALLY didn’t happen. I fought with every fiber (or fibre :P) I could. For those who wished to be bored by this tale, here you go:

At first, operation public school started well. I got certification and had all the paperwork sent in. I was told to just wait for an interview. But then, I got an email a few days later that there was this paperwork change and something going on with the bureaucracy that is teach.NSW and so they said once they figured it out they would call for an interview. I’m still waiting (insert jeopardy theme here)… to be called for an interview so I can get in the sub pool system. And yes I called them back every week to ask and their answer was to just keep waiting. So Australia… eh…about that whole “we need teachers” “it’s so easy” thing…

Any way, when operation public school seemed dim, I moved on to operation private school. I applied to 2 private schools looking for music teachers and never heard back. At the same time, I also started operation private lessons. I sent out e-mails to 30 schools within commuting distance of my house that had music programs to see about working with them or teaching private music lessons after school. I put up posts on the proverbial craigslists. I sent out e-mails to listserves for the Jewish community. I even put up fliers around the area. After all that, I only got 1 interested person. Really, life didn’t want me to teach music.

In the mean time, I was approached by a very kind man at shul who said he knew someone who was looking for a secretary. So, I decided to interview for the job. Pro tip: phone interviews are a win. I sat on the beach and spoke to some people in Israel. 1 Shabbos later, I had a job offer. After some pretty intense contract negotiations (which so far it seems I did rather well at) and waiting for the 9 days to be over, I officially started work last week! I am working for a startup Australian office of an Israeli jewellery company, or should I say JEWellery company. My employer is religious and therefore closes for all Jewish holidays. Yes. We also only work a ½ day on Friday because they want everyone to be set for Shabbos. Yes Yes. What an awesome situation! Also, the view from my office is pretty fitting, haha.

My first full-time job contract:

Other than that I haven’t done anything too exciting since my last post. I've been doing home-y and crafty things. I've been making alot of home fermented foods like saurkraut and yoghurt. I have made alot of yummy coconut milk yogurt with the free coconuts I get from BU Organics.

We also had a girls pottery painting night out hosted by the lovely Sara-Tova! I’ll try to put a picture up when we get the stuff back, but here is the pre-firing picture of my candle stick:

The Sydney community also had an awesome Tu B’Av (Jewish valentines day) party. It was a traffic light party at a fun bar. They had glow sticks and drinks and there were about 200 jewish young adults. I have never seen so many people of that age range in one place at one time. As the Aussies would say, it was hectic. I had really good time meeting people and seeing the community I am now a part of.

I’ll also end this post with something I have been meaning to do for a while,

The 6 Biggest Australia vs. USA differences I have noticed so far:

1. Everyone here uses an umbrella. No one, and I mean no one wears, owns, or really knows what a rain jacket is. They all dress super cute and use an umbrella.

2. There is no such thing as J-walking. You cross the street where you want, when you want,no questions asked. People here actually don't know what J-walking is or that you can get a ticket for it in the US. The first day I couldn't find any where to legally cross the street and I was so confused. Now I just walk across the road like everyone else.

3. Radio stations suck. There are 4 "top 40" stations, 2 "classic rock" stations, and some talk radio. They don't know the alt. rock genre. Thank you tunein app for getting me US radio.

4. There is no sales tax. The price on the tag is the price you pay at the counter. $20=$20.

5. Thou shalt not tip. It is not necessary. My cab driver didn't know what to do when I gave him a %10 tip.

6. Everyone is super friendly. When entering a shop to browse you always say hello, ask how the sales person's day is, basically shmooze and be really friendly. It is rude not to talk to everyone you meet. When I walk around my neighborhood everyone says hello and they really do say "g'day mate". I've had to adjust to being so greety-greety with people.

Still LOVING everything about this life choice! In the words of Brother Ali "I love the life I live. My laughter and my tears. I don't know where it's going, but I like it like it is"

To wherever my adventure waits...

"Everybody's going surfing..."

I went surfing! Which was awesome!!!! HELLO! As many of you know, I could be part fish, so I loved playing in the water! I went with a surf school that does trips. The group was Deano (the instructor) and 2 guys from the UK who had come to Sydney for a big rugby match. The small group meant lots of good opportunities! We had a great day! I also realized it was one of only a handful of times I have been swimming in the ocean. The waves took a bit of getting used to, but by the end of the day I was thoroughly enjoying surfing! And I stood up and rode some waves.

and a picture of our sweet beach side set-up:

Other than that, I was in the water and too busy living to take pictures!

The last week has been really good! I have been going adventuring and learning more about my new home. I LOVE Bare CrossFit and haven't missed a day! It is the best way to start my mornings.

I got invited by a friend to go to a Paleo "meetup". I met a bunch of fun people who eat like me and want to share recipies and such. It was a really cool night! I've also had some job interviews and am hoping to hear back soon about some possibilities. Looks like a I might have some fun decisions to make. Shabbos was lots of fun and I went to check out a new Shul. Met so many new people and the place had a great vibe. This week I also got involved with a group called Transition Bondi. It's a group that focuses on sustainability and eco living that does community gardening around Bondi. I had a blast gardening with them. Also, I spoke with one of the leaders and there's a project in the works that i'm hoping to get started with them. It has to do with a garden and a big kitchen... :) standby

Now that I have been to most of the beaches in walking distance of my house i'm going on adventures which require more than foot transport. I decided to take a ferry from the north end of the eastern suburbs over to Manly beach and then take another Ferry back to Circular Quay (which is pronounced Circular "Key") and make a big circle. My new friend Lara came with me and we had quite a good time.

This is is Watson's bay where the ferry leaves from

We stolled along the beach and enjoyed until the late afternoon:

 <- (That's Lara)

It turned out that the ferry we caught home was perfect for seeing the city and sunset. So beautiful!

(i'm on a boat :) )

It was a great day! and to top it off, our pub trivia team took 1st! Tonight the trivia team is doing something other than trivia (*gasp) and we are going to be part of the "live studio audience" for the taping of a show called Wednesday Night Fever. From what I can tell it's a like a cross between Saturday Night Live and the Colbert Report--politically charged sketch comedy. This goes on the list of strange free things I will find to do in the city. Hopefully there will be LOLs. :)

I'll try to be better about updating. Thanks for your patience and for actually reading this stuff.

-Darcy....from down under :)

UPDATE: Just got back from filming and it was a hoot. We laughed so hard! AND, I am going to make my Australian TV debut tomorrow at 9:30pm. I was the audience member seated next to one of the actors, so I will be getting some screen time.

"It's Raining, it's pouring..."

...and so i've been spending some quality time in my lovely apartment. For those who don't know, it actually rains more in Sydney than in Seattle. Because here it actually rains. You know how in Seattle it kinda just spits at you and is inconveniently moist? Well here it all out pours. Alot. And right now the news says that it is raining more than normal. In 1 day we got more rain than they got this whole month last year. To recap: every day is about 55 degrees F and raining big fat drops %80 of the time. Today they also issued a severe weather warning for the area that I live in. Dangerous winds, rain, and surf. But not to fear! I'm safe. Supposedly it should let up by this weekend and possibly be sunny and dry, but it is quite the experience. Oh, June-uary, how I love thee.

Want to know what else I love? Central heating. Here, no one has it. The temp outside, is the temp inside. I don't think I appreciated it enough in the US. Dear Central Heating, you were hot. Miss you. Love Darcy. Most people I have spoken to don't know what a thermostat is. Somehow the people here are adjusted and can wear thin clothing even though I am chilled. I am hoping to learn the ways of the non-central-heated soon. Good news, it isn't essential and really isn't that bad.

Speaking of the apartment, I relaized that I never posted more picture, so here they are:

The cozy living room where we tend to huddle around our electric heater (the only source of heat for the apartment) and enjoy a glass of red wine from time to time. This is the place of all great girl chat!

The dining table and balcony

This is our magical kitchen with the 1-temperature stove. But it is bright and we cook great food in it!

Our cute bathroom (and Megan, Becca, and Heather... note that the toilet is in a separate room!!! :p)

Even though I am spending a good amount of time inside, I have been doing plenty around too! Last week I got to volunteer in 2 KinderMusik classes and got to dance with some babies. I have now had "Peek-a-boo I love you" stuck in my head. #musicteacherproblems. I also spent some time reading in Gertrude and Alice. After Shabbos I was walking home and got an opportunity to dance in an absolute down pour. Soaked might be an understatement when describing my condition when I got home.

I started this week feeling so relaxed and dialed in. I kinda needed a little bit of a break! While I apply for jobs, I decided to focus on keeping my body healthy! I joined an awesome CrossFit Gym (CrossFit Bare) and am now part of the Bare Club! I have been waiting so long to find a CrossFit gym near my house, with a good vibe, that I had time to go to. Good thing I moved to Australia so that could happen.Haha! I'm excited to work on my strength and flexibility. I had a great workout today! And I appreciate the social hour option after we work out! Good way to make some new friends!

Raizel and I also made super yummy green stuff smoothies. As Raizel says" I just love my Veg!". Basically this is Kale, Chard, Box Choy, Spurilina, Avocado, Chia Seed, and Flax seeds. Blended with some water. (Yep, no sugar but really yummy, promise). Also, I got Raizel to let me take her picture! Here are us Green Godesses:

(I give you my gorgeous roommate Raizel Ahuva--she's like sunshine. Also she's from South Africa. She is into healthy living. And she works for the government changing lives and helping those with disabilities. Pretty much my soul mate.)

And, for those of you that noticed... yes, my hair is in a "fauxHawk". Had to do it up for going out that night :p

I went to the Beach Road Hotel which is a bar/live music venue that is touristy and well known. I saw a hip-hop show which was pretty fun. Then, on my way home I stopped by the Royal Hotel which is also a bar/live music venue that had a regge/ska band. Dipped my toe into the night life, but I know there is SO much more to discover.

..." to where ever [my] adventure waits!"

"...al tevilas kelim"

I didn't bring a waterbottle with me to Sydney because I didn't have room in my bags. So, before purchasing one, I have been doing research on what kind of containers are the healthiest. The internet has explained ALOT to me. I'd encourage you to look into it as well! As one might have guessd plastic really isn't a good choice. Steel/metal bottles are better, but are still known to leech toxins into the water. So, after a good amount of consideration I decided to go with a glass waterbottle. As I went exploring today, I found one that I liked at a shop because it comes with a removable silicone case that protects it from breaking. I'll let you know how long it lasts... but back to the fun--because I bought it new, I was lucky enough to get to tovel it!

*For those that don't know, toveling is basically a process of elevating a keilim (an object that you eat or drink out of) to a more spiritual level by dipping it in a mikveh. It is total "jew-jew" magic stuff. Not about sanitation but about spirituality. Yes, I know it sounds a bit crazy. But hey, why not have an excuse to dip stuff in water!

The super cool thing is that the ocean is a natural mikveh! How convenient that the beach was on my way home from the shops ;)

My adventure for the day was climbing about on some rocks and finding a good place to perch myself, as not to get wet, but to allow for complete submersion of my new bottle. Happy to say, my feet stayed dry! And here you see my freshly toveled bottle, after it's holy plunge.

It was so awesome being able to use the ocean and play in nature!

...I also may or may not have stopped to build a sand castle, hehe

"Sometimes I get lost just so I know where to go"- Warm Hardies

In order to learn my surroundings and figure out what cool stuff is near by, I have been spending a few hours each day playing, "let's get lost". It is one of my favorite games when in a new city--right up there with "Which way's North".

The rules are simple. Step 1: Start at a place you know. Step 2: Get lost/walk around with no intention or plan (but be sure to remember where you go in case you actually get lost and need to retrace your steps) Step 3: Discover stuff! Step 4: Keep walking until something looks familiar!

I have mastered Step 3:

Day 1, I found my apartment! And then the beach:

And I set up my room so it really does look just like home! (Still needs more on the walls, but that will come later)

After that, I branched out. I found a great local fruit and veg shop on a corner near my place

Which I thought was great...until I found this AMAZING everything organic store a few days later. It is a bit farther away, but so worth it!

It happens to be right around the corner from the Library! So, I got my library card :)

It also turns out there is an awesome nature preserve if you the other way from my flat:

On the otherside of the preserve, there is another beach:

I also found other cool shops and things, but I didn't take pictures.

I have also been having fun with friends! My flatmate Raizel and I had a wine and marshmellow house warming "party". I tried Fejioa for the first time. It is a slightly bitter fruit that I think tastes like soap. But I tried it!

Raizel and I have had fun cooking together becuase she is also very health concious. So many yummy veggies are in our food! It is fabulous. Our stove is funny however, because it has 2 settings on and off. Most stoves give you a range of temperatures to choose from. With ours, you can set the dial anywhere and it will be the same heat. Despite the fact that we have to cook on very high heat, we have managed to make some yummy food:

I also took the train to meet up with a friend from (as the Aussies say) Uni in Seattle. We went out to Pub Trivia with a great group of people and tied for first! Our team name was " The smart casual misogynists" and we ended up losing the sudden death dance off (hehe), so we won the second place prize. The photo will only show upside down for some reason, but here's the team:

I have also been setting stuff up. I got a mobile, a bank account, and a bus pass. I'm getting better at looking right before crossing the street. I'm learning how to greet people and be super friendly like all these Australians! I have learned that "How you going?" is a good way to start a conversation. Basically, I'm loving learning how to live in a foreign country!

"There'll be new dreams, maybe better dreams, and plenty, before the next revolving year is through"

Touchdown!!!!!

I landed safe in Sydney this morning and I am happily unpacking in my new apartment! (pictures to come)

When I got on the plane the flight attendant asked me if I was going home or traveling to Australia. It took me a second to respond as I came to the realization that I was headed home. And here I am! It really did feel like I was headed home as I got out of the cab and came to my front door (that had a welcome home sign on it). The flight was awesome! I got a whole row of 3 seats to myself (score!) so I got to lay down and get 8hours of beauty sleep.

I'm so excited that I did this and can't wait to see what crazy things happen to me in the next year. For now, I'm off to go find a beach! :)

"Somewhere over the rainbow...there's a land that i've heard of"

I'm savoring my last moments in Seattle: Went to Jazz Alley for the first time. Took graduation photos. Made raw "carmel" peach "cheesecake" with Ernestina. Having a send off get together tomorrow. Good times with good people!

My bags are almost packed and I have gotten rid of so many material belongings. It feels good in a way-clean start for the next chapter of my life. I also still think I am bringing too much stuff. But, let's just say i'm being prepared *cough* ;)

Still doesn't feel real that I am leaving. But, I'll soon be off to the land of "Oz" :)
