My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

When I first learned I was accepted for the Australia study abroad program at my college in Los Angeles, my first thought was for my need to capture and remember everything I see and do, because I may never get a chance to travel so far again. Going to a private college in the United States was in itself a feat for my family, so I knew I would have to cherish my semester abroad, because I knew it would be a long time before I would be able to afford a trip like that again. That is why I believe photography is such an important part of my experience abroad.
As a studio art major, I always try to record my sights and experiences through images, usually in paint, graphite, or clay. Much to my dismay, my school does not have a photography program, so I have never been able to develop my amateur passion, except through what I may learn in other mediums. Though I have never studied photography, I use photography to capture the emotions I have seeing such amazing sights as the Twelve Apostles at sunset. I had never been out of the United States before I came to Australia, and I have never felt so surrounded by unfamiliarity. So far, I have traveled around Victoria and Queensland and never would I have thought I’d feel such awe at the beauty of the world.
I wish everyone could travel as far as I have, so they could really sense the depth of the world and its completely natural, raw beauty that is so ephemeral and fleeting. Through my photographs, I hope to capture the amazement I feel when I witness the earth's beauty, and this scholarship would help put me on the track of sharing that with the world.
