Roadtrip - In search of truth, the world's best coffee shop

The inspiration for doing a road trip came from all the past experiences we've had on road trips that we enjoyed along with fond memories of Cape Town which is always very exciting to visit! You don't need a reason to visit Cape Town, but Truth coffee was the clincher.

Danie: I have completed my Honors degree in documentary film making in 2012 and has been involved in a number of local projects including some short films that Moabi also participated in, playing his typical comical-self.

Our passion for film drives us to continue sharpening our skills as director/videographer and presenter! We have immersed ourselves into the local and international film culture and aspire to reach those heights! As a film maker I had the opportunity to travel abroad this year to shoot some non travel-related videos. After returning I knew that traveling film making would always be my number one dream. Winning this competition will propel us into the next level of doing this for a living and not just a hobby, and the experience will be something we will treasure for a very long time.

We hope our video shows the level of passion and aspiration we have when it comes to travel film making!
My Scholarship entry - Through Local Eyes

South Africa has 11 official languages and even more different cultures. The fact that there is so much cultural diversity in South Africa, and in and around Johannesburg, inspired us to go explore Soweto – a part of Johannesburg neither of us have been to. We thought it would be a good idea to try to portray Soweto through local eyes.

Being best friends since high school, Moabi has featured in numerous of my projects. This video served as an opportunity to showcase his talent in front of the camera. I am an honors documentary film student and have produced some short films and documentaries. My ambition is to break into the feature film industry after graduating at the end of this year.

As a presenter, Moabi's ambition is to expand his on-screen experience to hopefully move on to bigger projects. Winning this scholarship would present a great opportunity for him to hone his skills. I also want to develop my talents as a documentary filmmaker, therefore gaining experience under a mentor would be very beneficial for me. One of my dreams is also to start up a side project focusing on creating short doccies for non-profits.

And we would really like to see Rio!

Submitting my entry

I submitted my entry yesterday morning at about 2 am after finishing working on it. It was a long day, I got up at 4am the previous morning to start filming at 5am in Ikageng at Dorah's house. I could only start so late because we are in the middle of exams now and I had to finish some exams before spending time on the documentary. It was quite a blast and an amazing experience though. Having to experience Dorah's passion and her amazing heart to give as evident in being willing to help me and participate in a documentary video was something amazing and it touches you. This was well worth the effort and the experience.

Documentary Scholarship 2011 entry

I met Dorah through a friend of mine who does regular community work in Ikageng, a township outside of the city of Potchefstroom. Her story of how she decided to focus on improving her community instead of self-pitying herself despite serious symptoms of HIV/Aids at the time is heartwarming. She used part of her disability grant to start out the school as well as broke down her old settlement to be able to build a building. Her steadfast commitment to her cause and everyday lifestyle of hopefulness amid such dreary living conditions is something of what I hoped to capture in this documentary.

I am currently a student at the North-West University in Potchefstroom, North West, South Africa, studying for a degree in communication. Videography has been a passion for a long time, but this is my first documentary video.

I am not yet sure what my niche area is as a videographer, but am willing and keen to explore documentary film making and I certainly harbor a sense of adventure when it comes to travelling and capturing events of a trip. I will therefore greatly benefit from the travel documentary scholarship as a means to broaden my experience, knowledge as well as professional career in terms of interaction with the people I will meet.
