A 'place' I have visited

I have begun to follow my heart with my passion of photography into making my childhood dream a reality. I have begun to set foot into the photojournalist path by doing a few freelance assignments, with addition to develop my own travel blog and website to show others that there is more to the world than what meets the eye. There is beauty out there every way you look. I grew up with a passion for photography and always admired the photos of National Geographic. Along with my later newfound love of my camera, I was given the gift of the travel bug. I enjoyed studying maps, watching National Geographic documentaries and reading about travel. I’ve spent sometime living overseas embracing new cultures. I love to experiment with different techniques that make my photograph unique. It’s all about waiting for that perfect shot to take place. I believe that I do have a gift inside of me. I would love to explore it further and to learn all about the camera and composing my photographic eye to find my voice to tell a story threw the lens.

My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I have learned to always have my camera close by. I have chosen work situations that allow me to travel to new places and enjoy new experiences. Most recently, I have worked with Lindblad Expeditions on excursions to Southeast Alaska to the Galapagos. These have all been enriching experiences. In my photographs, I enjoy experimenting with different angles of the composition, challenging the rule of thirds by off centering my subject matter, all in an attempt to create and capture a uniquely different photograph. I have learned that much of photography is about waiting for that perfect shot to take place. I am a patient and thoughtful person and these traits serve me well in my photography. A lot of time goes into the photographic process from shooting to editing to publication. Fortunately for me, I enjoy all aspects of the process. I believe that I do have a gift inside of me. I would love to spend eight days in Oman alongside National Geographic Photographer Jason Edwards. To learn the nature of the photography business from start to finish from a professional photographer would be an opportunity of a lifetime.

Photos: My Photo Scholarship 2011 Entry

I developed a passion for travel and photography at an early age. I recall listening to stories told by my grandfather, a sea captain, of all the amazing places that he had seen. This inspired me and planted the seeds of my desire to see the world. My curiosity about the world and its culture has led me to develop a wanderlust lifestyle. I try to capture glimpses of the world, its differences, its unique individuals, and its astonishing beauty with my camera lens. Photography to me is about capturing that rare moment, that instant in time and sense of being that you that can only be captured by a camera. I am a self-taught, amateur photographer. I rely on my instincts to capture the perfect moment through the lens. The more photographs I take the better my instincts are getting. I enjoy travel photography and also capturing the beauty of the place that I call home, Maine. I hope to some day carve a successful career path by incorporating my travel tales and my photos. My greatest pleasure would be to inspire others to leave their comfort zone and experience the world and all that it has to offer.

I had the opportunity to sail among the islands of the Galapagos for a week in July 2011. It was truly an amazing experience to be in Darwin's Playground looking for wildlife with breathtaking beauty around every corner. I have never experienced such an abundance of wildlife. Animals appeared to greet us as we stepped from the Zodiac each morning. I had also never experienced summer and winter in a single day before but we did it by sailing across the equator. The Galapagos are a must see place for any real adventure traveler and conservationist.
