My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

The photos are a multitude of moments that I captured while walking across my campus in Worcester, MA during a snowstorm one night. They all have this sense of empty silence that snow has, a feeling I set out trying to capture. I have toyed around with photography my whole life, always trying to capture the sensation of a moment. Photography however, has always come secondary to the two goals I have set out for my life; to work toward allowing every individual to take part in the opportunities I have been given, and to understand the world from each culture’s eyes. I am currently in school to become a part of the Foreign Service, however halfway through my degree I find myself questioning if being a part of the bureaucratic system will truly allow me to make life better for those around me. Thus, when this opportunity and I crossed paths during one of my long winded excursions across the internet, it made me consider pursuing a photographic journalist approach to fulfilling my goals. This past semester, I spent five months in Beijing teaching English and studying Mandarin. I then took the money and language I acquired and traveled for two months in the Western portion of the Sichuan province, along the border with Tibet. I fell in love with the Tibetan people, a people who, in their words, “have no time for fighting when the sky is so big.” I would love to be able to explore the Himalayan culture further, meet more people who live under that “big sky.” In other words, I am well-traveled, I am a quick learner, and the opportunity to be mentored by Jason would, most definitely, change the entire course of my life.
