"The World is a book and we read only a few pages." This is true in every sense of travel & its Photography. While traveling for long/short distances, it is always desirable for me to know the people and their stories before taking out my gear from my bag. India is a very colorful and rich in its festivals, cultures, traditions which I am exploring in recent years. I meet the people to become friendly so they can surface their spirit of cultures. Some of these cultures are vanishing due to rapid urbanization and lack of common aspirations in the communities. To me exploring unknown places with local inhabitants is as important as recording my shots. Each time, I am surprised to gather memories which form my basis of taking travel photography in a different way. In this Journal what I intend to show about a nearly lost cultures/traditions which is known as "Bandhna" in Purulia, India. The literal meaning of "Bandhna" is worshiping cattle during the month of early November when the harvest is over. Lots of activities are performed and related with this celebrations. Wall paintings, hand made artwork on earthen floors, weaving baskets are parts & parcel of "Bandhna". But one can find a very few traces of Bandhna Celebrations across the country in tribal population due to some known reasons such as rapid urbanization etc.

Photos: Photo Scholarship 2013

To me, my passion has been travel photography through which I want to convey the "sense of place". It is by the virtue of expressing sense of place one can smell the essence of that place and primarily the objective to visit the place. Travel photography is a part of both extensive and intensive travel. Hence I like to travel a lot.
These shots has been taken from "Gongoni"- a gorge type landscape below which a shallow river "Silabati" flows. Photographers who used to visit that place, are always in a habit of capturing so called collective fishing and nothing more. But there are so many gems to explore. The struggle of tribal people, their activities, overcoming gorge in search of earnings, merriment etc. I want to reflect that how lives of tribal people on water are dependent there in Gongoni, a small village in Midnapore District, West Bengal, India.

Whenever I visit a new place for the purpose of photography, initially I stroll about and explore to look for exact vantage point, choosing different angles, mixing up with local people without letting my gear out of my backpack. This is just for what I am looking to shoot and feel the essence of the place. For I believe, that if my vision is not quiet clear as to what and why I am capturing all these things, I can not show my viewers that what exactly I want to convey through my images.

Photos: My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

To me, my passion has been travel photography through which I want to convey the "sense of place". Whenever I go to some new places, I explore the place in my own style so one can feel the essence of the place, its culture, bio diversity and people in their normal habitat.
In my photo submissions 2013, I elevate a very unusual location in West Bengal, namely "Gongoni" which is famous for its gorge type pattern below which a shallow water river "Silabati" flows. Photographers who generally used to visit that place, try only to capture the famous collective fishing in river water. But there are other gems in that place which I wanted to explore in my two visits there. The river migration, crossing the gorge, refreshments offered by the shallow water bed can be visualized. These show the daily struggle and lives of the local tribal.
Whenever I reach a place during my photo assignment, first of all I stroll about the place, try to find something unusual but attractive in that place without letting my gear out of my bag. Because I believe myself that If my vision is not clear as to why and what I actually want to shoot, I can not visualize my visions to my viewers.

Photos: My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

To me Photography is a language of expressing the real life experience of this world. I love and try to capture creative photography to express my country's rituals, people and their living, their customs, traditions and finally their daily struggle. Noteworthy I am in very much favour of stright photography.

During my short visit to a small tribal village "Dwaronda" near Shantinikatan (The place of RabindraNath Tagore), I was able to interact with the tribe called 'Santhal' in the village. The fascinating thing of this village is that the women folk of the village is primarily engaged to earn their daily bread and butter. They engage mainly in doing handicrafts, handmade articles which they sell to the local weekly market. They are happy with their very low standard of living. I was surprised to explore their basic needs to such a minimum level. I was happy with their hospitality to me.

The story of that tribal village "Dwaronda" depicts the livings of many Indian tribal villages which are still in distressed and in dismal condition.Especially we talk about women empowerment all over the world. Their upliftment as well as development are badly needed. My photo-essay is to create the awareness among the people of all over the world so that the agony and struggle of such tribal people may be relieved in a significant way.

Finally if I am entrusted with such assignment, I will definitely be able to deliver my best possible efforts. I believe that my captured images can tell a story. With that belief, I would be able to represent the livings, struggles and daily activities of such racial, cultural groups and people of any part of the world in a creative way - by the "language of photography".
