Photos: My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Throughout history, mankind has always felt a need for visual references to past events. While the human imagination serves this purpose to a point, it is still hard to beat an actual image representation of what happened. From the ancient drawings found on cave walls depicting hunts and battles, to present day photographs of weddings, newborns, and holidays; we always have, and, most likely, always will, long for those visual reminders of significant events past.
What has changed between now and the days of crushed plant-life being smeared on walls, is that now our visual reminders no longer convey merely the story but, with the right amount of skill, can convey the tale in a manner that, even those who were not present at the time, can feel the same emotions of excitement, fear, mourning, anxiety or any number of possibilities.
It is this ability that fascinates me, and which I strive to achieve through my photography. I like to think that my abilities are above the average facebook-posting individual, but I know that the ceiling for what I can still learn is limitless.
This scholarship would be an unbelievable opportunity to learn, and further my understanding of this art-form.

Photos: My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Since I was very young, I have always had a fascination with photography. My dad used to regularly catch me fiddling with his Konica Minolta SLR. Eventually he gave in and on my 12th birthday I was given my own, older model, Olympus SLR.
Since then photography has been something I have always loved. It was later in life that I discovered my love of travel; a love that has had a very symbiotic relationship with my love of photography.
Last year I visited Jordan and fell in love with the culture of the middle east. To have the chance to capture the similar, though still vastly different culture of Oman would be a dream come true. Photo journalism has always been something I would love to see myself doing some day in the future, though the need, in the past, for a reliable income, and the difficulty to break into this world has held me back. This chance you are offering would be such an important tool for getting me into the world I long to be a part of; one of adventure, new experiences and encounters, new people and cultures, the challenges of meeting deadlines and completing assignments, as well as the problem solving and decision making that come with travel, are all what I crave.
