SPAIN | Monday, 1 September 2008 | Views [400]

Jazza and I headed to Spain in the last week of August. The lure was La Tomatina in Bunol but it also provided us with the chance to catch up with Stewie Gray, one of our really good mates from school, and also to check out Barcelona.

We flew into Alicante from Stansted and stayed with Stewie and Magda for a couple of nights (who it was good to finally meet!)I was expecting a fairly ordinary seaside town but it was actually quite pretty and we had some great food there and a couple of swims. Pete and Em drove up from Granada and we caught up with them too which was great. One night we had a quality tapas banquet which was massive!

Jazza and I hired a car and we headed up the coast in convoy with Pete and Em which was great fun. We stopped at a number of the small towns along the coast and stopped for a few swims. The weather rarely moved from between 30 and 32 degrees! One of the funniest things was getting stuck in peak hour during the middle of the day as people returned home for a siesta - classic! That night we arrived in Valencia and caught up with Phaedra and Lawson who'd flown in. We all headed out for a traditional Spanish meal before Jazza and I somehow managed to navigate our way to Bunol despite having absolutely no idea which direction out of the city we needed to go. Jazza did a really good job driving and after about an hour we'd arrived in Bunol. Scoped out the town (it was fairly quiet there actually) and then got a few hours sleep in the car. I got wrecked by mosquitoes actually. I had almost totally lost my voice too which wasn't ideal!

The next morning we got our white outfits together and headed to the town square where Tomatina was to take place. The Sangria looked as though it had knocked a few people around from the night before! We got a pretty awesome vantage point in the square where the fun starts with punters trying to climb this greasy pole to grab this ham. Very random! The punters were really starting to swarm now - unfortunately many an Aussie Fanatic but that wasn't so bad as it gave us a good excuse to really pelt them with tomatoes! We met up with the other guys just in time before you could hardly move. Next thing the big trucks filled with rotten tomatoes began to creep along the streets and before long we were being pelted with tomatoes and returning the favour! I was absolutely amazed with how much tomato there was - it was probably a metre deep. It was really hard to recognise people after a few minutes too. The hour was such a crazy experience - great fun but the smell was overpowering and you feel so grubby! Thankfully none of us got too seriously injured and we tried to wash some of the tomato off us whilst still in the town, although I was still finding bits of tomato in my hair a couple of days later!

We left Tomatina and headed up the coast to Benicassim which was a great little town. Jazza took a likening to the Bulgarian receptionist at our hotel so there was quite a bit of banter flying about. Checked out the beach and had some awesome Tapas that night.

The next day we headed up to Barcelona. We were dropping off the car at Reus airport which was a bit challenging as there weren't that many signs directing us to the airport. Managed to get this service station attendant to draw us a diagram without a word of English and he came through with the goods as we located the airport and dropped off the car. Then hopped on an airport bus which took us right into Barcelona.

Barcelona was absolutely fantastic. I loved every minute of it. We ended up staying in this apartment which was quite good, and had a good look around the shops and eateries. I also took in a cycling tour of the city, an open top bus tour and we checked out a couple of the nightspots too which weren't too bad.

Returned to London on Friday and the trip certainly fuelled my desire to see more of Spain in due course!
