Photos: My Scholarship entry - Challenges of city life

Two years before I moved to Australia from the Philippines in 2009, I finally owned my first camera. I used to borrow my dad’s old Olympus OM and dreamed of having my own darkroom (I still do). Photographs of the Holocaust, the Vietnam War and the gorillas with Dian Fossey were among the images that made me become interested in photography. I have told stories through writing and editing, but photojournalism is my ultimate dream. My camera is an essential part of me. Through the lens, I find that people and places are different yet the same. I love that one subject can be interpreted differently. What may seem mundane can be significant. I am interested in what’s often overlooked, as well as the passion, beauty, contrasts and unpleasant side of life. These drive me to tell stories through images that are pure and evoke emotions. The mere opportunity to join this scholarship has helped me to constantly work on my skills and search for the best shots through natural means. To win it would be a big step closer towards understanding what it takes to become a professional photographer and be among those who tell stories effectively without compromising the integrity of images.

Photos: My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited - Suburbia Up Close

To me, photography is about seeing the world in unadulterated fashion but composed beautifully to evoke emotions and make an impact. Through words, I have applied this view as a journalist but to tell stories through photography – that may even help raise awareness on social and environmental issues – is my greatest aspiration. I love taking photographs of people in their natural setting, of wildlife, landscapes and scenes expressing the uniqueness of cultures and highlight social issues – much of the latter in the Philippines, where I grew up and tinkered with my father’s old SLR camera before finally saving enough to buy my own. Now living in Australia, my passion for photography continues to grow particularly for sights whose beauty and simplicity we sometimes take for granted. Capturing the natural beauty of what we are and what we have along with the imperfections drive me to take better shots so much so that I’d typically run out of memory space. I’m driven by my dedication to keep learning from every shot I make and thankfully this opportunity to learn from Jason Edwards came along that, if I win, I would take full advantage of to become a good photographer.

My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

My passion for photography was influenced by powerful and captivating images of people, nature and historic events I saw as a child in magazines some of which were older than I was. I have always been fascinated by what story is behind a picture and how a single image can evoke diverse reactions – from a simple smile to something more intense.

I’m greatly inspired by whatever surrounds me to take pictures – from the hustle and bustle of city life in Manila, Philippines where I grew up to the laid-back lifestyle of North Queensland, Australia where I have been living for almost four years now and where its proximity to nature never ceases to amaze me.

The National Geographic scholarship comes at time when I find myself at a crossroads in my journalism career. I see this opportunity as a step toward fulfilling a lifelong passion to produce inspiring images – much like what those pictures did for me as a child – and tell stories through the art of pure and professional photography.

I’m very excited about the possibilities: absorbing every bit of information from this learning experience with Jason Edwards, meeting new people, and taking my life to a whole new level of meaning.
