E então, novidades? | So, what's new?

(The English version will be uploaded shortly)

Das primeiras impressões | First impressions

Não me interpretem mal: é caótico.

- sociedade “relacional” + muita gente.

Curiosamente, não me tenho sentido “invadida”...

E, assim, a Índia surpreendeu.

Maybe I should start by saying that I love to travel and get to know new worlds, but I've always had second thoughts as far as India is concerned. Sure, it stirred my curiosity and I imagined there were breathtaking places. After all, it is a "subcontinent"! But the mental images I had from television, movies and stories from other travelers left me "suffocated": for someone like myself, who cherishes "personal space" as the air you breathe, so many people and so much agitation were simply too much.

This was the perfect opportunity: volunteering, putting my job skills - acquired over more than 10 years - at the disposal of those who need it, while looking for me amongst so many people.

And so, I took a deep breath and I headed - like Vasco da Gama - fearless and hopeful towards this new world.

Unfortunately for me there is a stereotype that holds true: everything is spicy! Too much! My poor palate, that prefers to keep distance even from plain pepper, has been suffering. (And, to make things worse, I compensate with rice and several types of "bread" that there exist around here – getting to know the difference between Naan, Roti and Chapati was a real challenge!)

Surprisingly, contrary to expectations, traffic is not as chaotic as I expected! Don't get me wrong: it is chaotic. Where there should be a queue of traffic, there are two or three (in the same direction); they know more about tangents than many laureates in mathematics!; If it is more convenient, people drive towards oncoming traffic; the roads have cars, motorcycles, tuk tuks, people, animals, etc.; and the no-honking applies... ever – if you see a car, beep; if you see a motorcycle, beep; if you see someone, beep; if you see a goat, beep... you get the point...). To top all this off... the Brits got them driving on the wrong side of the road! But, yes, I stand by it: it is not as chaotic as expected. Maybe after seeing Luanda’s and other African place’s traffic I’m "vaccinated". And I also imagine, and I've been told, that Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore meet the expectations of absolute chaos. I suppose the trick is to avoid, if not completely, at least to start with those cities.

"Personal space is a rare commodity". Mo said it – a very nice, empathetic Indian, who came to talk to us about the interesting and useful topic of cross-cultural aspects to be mindful of. "They're going stare at you: you are foreigners, and women," he said. "They’ll ask personal questions such as "are you married?" or "do you have children?": this is a relationship-based society, and not to ask is rude; In addition, women marry and have children early in their lives.", he continued. "They'll touch you, get close, ..." - relationship-based society + a lot of people.

Interestingly, I haven't been feeling "invaded" ... Once again, I'm in a big – but not too much – city. And I'm in a quiet residential area. I have also been able to successfully reconcile “me time" with everything else: the main relievers are 1) my own room with a balcony towards a peaceful terrace/garden of another house in the back; 2) the friendly and respectful-of-other’s-space flat mate; 3) the weekend getaways; 4) the entire group and the different activities that we're doing together; and, last but not least, 5) the extraordinary people of the organization that I came to support.

And, like that, India surprised me.

Finalmente, escreveu! | At last, she wrote!

Passaram exatamente duas semanas desde o início desta aventura.

It's been exactly two weeks since the beginning of this adventure.

The pace has been frenetic - although, surprisingly, less than expected in some aspects - and there hasn’t been much room left to writing. But I will try to begin summarizing these two amazing weeks, certainly without doing them justice.

Da viagem: uma história interminável

Tudo começou bem, no Porto.

“no pasa nada”!

Ufa! Finalmente pronta para “levantar” as bagagens! Ora muito bem… “tapete” 4… aqui está. Hmm, não vejo as minhas malas. Diga? Diga? De onde venho? Abu Dabi. Tiraram as malas do tapete? E puseram onde? Não percebo… Ah, ali estão elas! Obrigada!...

E assim começa a jornada!

The journey: a never-ending story

Everything started well, at Oporto. It was a little early in the morning, but I was excited.

A little jump, and there’s Madrid! And, boy, it’s cold! But there's no time for contemplation. The next flight is right away, and I still have to run through the airport to find the right terminal.

But... "no pasa nada”! Already on board, there is " Wi-Fly " (modern stuff!) and movies for all tastes.

7 hours and change later, Abu Dhabi. You can feel the heat already. The waiting time is not too long either and, before you know it, it's time to board again.

On board, first "encounter" with spicy food. I first tasted, cautiously, the presented green sauce, to then, confidently, mix it generously with rice! It wasn't so bad after all! Or so I thought… Several glasses of water after, we're ready to land in Hyderabad, India!

So far, so good! Flights without delays, all quiet... (although the prayer in Arabic on take-off gets me a little anxious, I admit)

And along comes the Hyderabad airport! As in Luanda, Angola, the queue to pass the passport control almost exits the terminal. And, as in Luanda, Angola, the heat inside the airport leaves you – literally – dripping sweat.

I was kindly "saved" by a woman, from what I assumed to be "pickup lines" from some "gentlemen". Nothing too "invasive" (I obviously didn't understand a word they were saying!). But the lady called me to be near her, in what I understood to be a gesture of protection and assistance. There is good in every corner of the world!

Phew! Finally, ready to pick up the luggage! Alright... "belt" 4... here it is. Hmm, I don't see my bags. Say? I don't understand... The bags from Abu Dhabi are not in this "belt"? So, where are they? No, it can't be, I have to go back there, it was a mistake. Say? Where do I come from? Abu Dhabi. They took the bags off of the belt? And put them where? I don't understand... Oh, there they are! Thank you!...

The accent will clearly be a challenge...

Well, now, according to the instructions received, I must get money at the ATM and get a "prepaid" cab (not the others, they charge twice as much!). Simple, right? There are the ATM machines! Hmm... This one has no money. And this one is not in service. And why did I only bring €20 in cash with me?!

Don't panic! I'm going to connect to the airport Wi-Fi and call an Uber. The Wi-Fi is not working ... And I don't even get mobile network signal.

I change my €20 in a currency exchange counter. I have to sign a form for the Government to ensure that this is the first time I do it (?!). I have just enough rupees to get to the accommodation, according to what I’ve been told. What if it is not enough? ... I will try an Uber again. Good, I got it! Huh? I have to meet the driver where?

After several minutes to find the location reserved for "Uber pick-ups", cancelling a driver for not being able to find him and looking around and around for the second driver – behold! There he is! Parked, in a parking slot, sitting in the car, waiting, minding his own business.

Half an hour drive later, I’m at the street where the accommodation is. But there are no numbers on the doors, and I don't know where it is and the driver doesn’t either. I try to call the number they gave me, but my mobile phone balance was all used up trying to find the Uber driver... I ask the driver to make the call, which he does – thankfully!

At cost, I realize where the accommodations are and I finally – over 3:00 after landing and already at dawn – get to the room reserved for me. I’m really tired, but there was still time to warm up the heart with the welcome card of _Social Starters.

And, so, the journey begins!
