Ranching in Patagonia: Between Ice and Sky

I am currently a graduate student at the University of California Davis majoring in International Agricultural Development. You may ask, “Why this major? Why not photography?” The reason is, I truly believe that education offers us an opportunity to think critically about ourselves and the world around us. It is my hope that studying current issues in agriculture will help inform my photography and give me a platform from which to use a visual medium to inform the general public on a range of issues from land use to food security. However, as a photographer, I am currently on the cusp. I am building a portfolio on things I care about, working diligently, and networking. Nonetheless, I am still missing that “last step” to enter the world professionally. To get to work an assignment with Jason Edwards would mean the world to me and my photographic career. As much as I am a believer in traditional education, I also know that life experiences and enthusiastic mentors are some of life's best teachers. I would be honored to get the opportunity to learn not just the art of photography, but the important skills of living and working on the road from a true professional.

Photos: My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I am an emerging photographer with a passion for the art of documentary story telling. I am on the cusp of serious amateur photography, needing that final push to enter photojournalism as a profession. I want and need guidance. I can imagine nothing more valuable than experiencing and participating in a real assignment while being mentored by a professional at the top of his field.

I've spent the past three years living in Chile learning about local ranching practices. In 2014 I will start a graduate program in International Development and Agriculture to give me the academic grounding behind issues of social, developmental, and environmental concerns I've seen around the globe. While photography is the "language" I want to cultivate to share with the world current social justice concerns, returning to academia is about deepening my understanding of the issues themselves thereby strengthening my effectiveness in documenting stories.

However, in order to tell these stories well, I know that I must seek excellence in my photographic craft. I approach this opportunity with a true desire and hunger to learn, engage fully, and open my mind to new ways of seeing and viewing the world.
