My Travel Writing Scholarship 2011 entry - Responsible Travel

There are many things that a city like Bangkok, Thailand can offer to those who are adventurous travelers but by far the one thing not to miss is a sort of shady, tucked away market that transforms a regular shabby clay parking lot into a collectors bartering dream. The Night Markets of Bangkok are well known for their cheap t-shirts and knock off brand name goods but the Ratchadaphisek night market which brags and boasts of second hand and vintage finds shows that in a city that embraces some of the largest shopping malls in Asia that products of past are never that hard to find if you do not mind sorting through the pile. Not to many markets will offer the range from posters, vinyl, furniture all the way to automobiles. For anyone who has a love of Vespa's, Volkswagon Bugs or Bettles and is need of searching out vintage motorcycle parts this is a not to be missed stop in Bangkok. We came back with a classic pair of Nike shoes which had been salvaged from the landfill by fixing the rubber souls and a hard plastic vintage suitcase which beat both the knock off versions you see scattered all over in both price and quality. The highlight of the market for myself was sorting through the tangled mix of endless second hand shoes while trying to find the right size but also trying to find the matching shoe among the hundreds which dangle over the poles at the stall. I still wear those faded blue Nike shoes to this day and continue to get comments and compliments on them which turns into a long winded adventure story to anyone who will listen.

I spent New Years Eve with a friend in Marseille and went skiing in Vars. The food in the south of France is amazing and the skiing was as well.
