Amalfi Coast

Amalfi Coast

The road along the Amalfi Coast is so narrow that drivers are advised to fold in their side mirrors and many cars bear scars on the driver’s side.  The locals speed into the turns and drift across the center line, scaring the daylights out of us tourists.  Buses provide their own dose of terror.  And this is the winter season!  I don’t want to think about what it is like in the summer.

The Mediterranean Sea sparkles like diamonds.  And in summer a swim at one of the beaches must be tempting.  Towns like Amalfi, Positano and Maiori, where we stayed, make a nice “vacation from your vacation.”  If this appeals to you, consider going to Croatia.  Or Montenegro.  For my money – and a whole lot less of it – the Balkan coast is a better deal.  Matchless scenery, fewer tourists, charming coastal towns, great food.  As the Croatian adverts say, “the Med as it used to be!”  The choice is yours.
