The Ambassador Van (mk2)....retires

The Ambassador Van has been on the road for nearly two years now. It's done more than a few laps of Oz, survived a crash by the Lost Girls, rested more than 35 Ambassador heads on it's pillows, ferried more cases of beer than we care to know, and created enough travel memories to produce more than 500 stories, 5000 photos and 50 videos!

Poor old Ambassador Van needs a well deserved rest, so he will be heading for retirement in Cairns to take up lawn bowls and bingo (he's got his Hawaiian shirts and safari shorts picked out!).

The 2008 World Nomads Book of Travels brings together a sampling of the incredible diversity and number of journal postings and images from worldnomads.com. Thank you to everyone who shared their travel journals and photos with us - we have really enjoyed putting your book together.

Selecting the stories and photos was a tricky task, and whilst the published material is exceptional - there were many outstanding stories and photos that were not selected for thematic reasons and technical constraints. If you haven't been published in this book - don't worry, we've decided to make this an annual thing, so get writing and snapping for next year. Do you need any more excuses to keep travelling?

• Improvise. Create Sanchez by resembling him physically somewhere amazing on your journey or create him with rocks on the beach or in the snow or with sunscreen, you get the idea! (See our slacklining Sanchez video!)

• Download Sanchez to your iPod or as a screensaver and get footage of him out and about at a rock concert ( he loves ' Rage Against the Machine' !), Sunbaking or riding a camel in India.

Tips from World Nomads - Lonely Planet's trusted travel insurance provider.

Here are a few things to consider when choosing your insurance to make sure that you will be covered on your adventure:

* Cancellation: It's no fun if you fall ill before you leave and can not go on your trip. To claim though, you have to buy your insurance policy when you buy your trip. Not all insurance policies cover cancellation, so please read the policy wording relevant to you carefully

* Lost or Stolen Gear: most travel insurance policies have a per-item value limit – make sure its high enough to cover your gear or choose a policy that allows you to increase the limit.

* Medical expenses over and above evacuation: check that your cover includes emergency treatment while away and transport to bring you home – remembering that insurance providers will usually insist on getting you home as soon as you are fit enough to travel.

The World Nomads book of travels 2007

So you think you are good enough to be a travel writer or photographer? Well here is your chance.

World Nomads are publishing the very best stories and photography from 2007 in a professionally designed hardback book through Blurb.com. The book will be a collection of stories and photographs from our travel community, presenting the boldest, most exhilarating and audacious adventures from around the world.

We invite you to submit your best stories or photographs either from your existing World Nomads Travel Journal ... or one you create. Each successful contributor will receive a free a copy of the book to show off to your friends and familly as well as a share of the profits.

Common Questions
1. Can I enter both stories and photographs?
Yes, if you think your content is good enough, but from our experience people tend to be better at one or the other.

2. How much will I earn from inclusion in the book?
Sorry, we simply don't know. This depends on the volume of books we sell as well as the number of contributors it has to be split with, however this is a book for you and about you, so we want to keep the profits with you.

3. How are profits calculated?
Total profits will be calculated every 12 months and split evenly between the contributors. However, to make the process managable, if the profits are less than US$20 per contributor, the total profit will be donated to Oxfam (www.oxfam.org).

4. Does it cost anything to submit?
No, we encourage you to have a go but please be selective with your very best work.

1. For stories
You can enter up to 5 of your best travel stories from 2007 but they need to appear as part of a World Nomads travel journal, so if you don't already have one, create one first, add your top stories and then note the URL of each story on the entry form.

2. For Photography
You can enter up to 5 of your best travel photographs from 2007.
* Upload these to flickr.com
* Caption each image as you wish them to be published
* Tag the photographs with "World Nomads Adventures"
* Add them to the WorldNomads.com group
* Note the URL of each image on the entry form.

3. Complete the entry form no later than Monday 31st December 2007. The best entries will be selected for publication in the World Nomads' Book of Travels 2007 and successful entrants will be notified by Monday 21st January, 2008.

Kick Start a Travel Writing Career with the World Nomads Ambassador Program

Do you dream about capturing an Uluru sunset on video, swimming with dolphins in Monkey Mia, photographing the breaks along the Great Ocean Road, podcasting a dance party under a full moon and chilling-out in the rainforests of Northern Queensland... And then writing about it for the whole world to read?

Then you could be the ideal World Nomads Ambassador !!

WE WANT YOU ! to travel all over the Australian countryside, write about it, blog it, vodcast and podcast it on the World Nomads website – vehicle and technical requirements provided free of charge – and you could be on your way to a career as a travel writer. Or at least a travel tragic.

World Nomads is looking for a minimum of 16 ‘Adventure Ambassadors’ to share in a huge, two-year Aussie road trip. Travellers Auto Barn will provide the Ambassador van (which bears little resemblance to its Indian namesake) and if you make the grade and get selected as an Ambassador, you can drive off into the countryside, exploring the great Aussie continent at will, for up to six weeks.

This is not a competition, this is a monumental challenge for would-be travel blogger extraordinaires !

What you'll need to be

The selection process will be based on the following

* You must have a monumental spirit for adventure and a desire to share your adventures through blogs, podcasts & vidcasts.

* You must be comfortable with the use of laptop computers, mobile phones & iPods; in a nutshell, you can't be a technophobe.

* You must be over 21 and hold a valid overseas drivers licence.

* You must be already travelling in Australia and prepared to travel to the designated pick up point to take over the Ambassador van from the previous Nomads. However, you'll be able to choose your own route for the 6 weeks you have the van.

What we'll provide to help you

* The World Nomads Ambassador van (provided by Travellers Auto Barn) to get you and your travelling partner/s around Australia in comfort, safety and lashings of World Nomads style !

What you'll have to do as the World Nomads Ambassador

* When you're on the road, you'll need to post a minimum of three (3) written journal entries per week, a minumum of 2 audio podcasts per trip and/or a minimum of 2 vidcasts per trip.

* As part of your journal commitments above, you must use your Lonely Planet guide book to source a unique destination once a week and write, record or film it as a 'Great guidebook moment'.

* You'll need to cover the running costs of the van (fuel, oil etc) as well as your living expenses (food, alcohol etc).

* You'll need to abide by the terms of a standard car rental agreement - including having a valid driver's licence and a credit card, as well as the terms & conditions set out by World Nomads whilst you're an Ambassador ( i.e. Don't get arrested for driving the car and roof surfing nude down the main street of Sydney !!)

Remeber, the selection process will be based on applicants’ skills, availability, eagerness – and a monumental appetite for adventure. This is must, so if you prefer to sit at home and watch re-runs of the Nanny, don't apply!!

World Nomads decided we couldn't do this on our own so we've teamed up with the following companies to help build the World Nomads Ambassador program.

Intrepid Travel ( The Adventurer ):
Intrepid Travel have been supporting travellers by providing a wide range of adventure trips, and now they're proudly supporting our World Nomads. Two lucky groups of Ambassadors we be given an Intrepid adventure into the Red Heart of Australia...stay tuned for that one !

Adecco ( The Juice ):
As our Ambassadors are either here or in Australia already post trip, we want to give them the opportunity to tap into the Aussie job market, to earn some coin, and keep them in Australia or gainfully employed well after they've enthralled us all with their Ambassador escapades. As the world leading employment services company, Adecco can help keep our Ambassadors travelling.

Global Gossip ( The Matrix ): They will provide free wireless web access to upload your blogs and podcasts from their cafes around Oz.
