    The Park rescues elephants from abusive environments and provides a safe home where they can roam freely, interact naturally, and form family groups, just like they would in the wild. Mae Dow is the elephant on the left and has a deformed back and broken hip through forced breeding. She has been adopted by Mae Lan Na (elephant on the right), and they are now one of many family groups at the park. The Park educates tourists regarding the inhumane treatment of elephants and other animals in the tourist industry, so that tourists can understand and make informed choices when taking part in any activities involving animals. They have over 70 dogs, 40 cats, buffalos, cows, pigs, and birds under their care. They try, as far as possible, to rehabilitate animals and return them to an appropriate habitat. The dogs and cats are able to roam freely around the park, and the dogs can often be seen around the elephant enclosures. by: toomanyllamas Views[770] In Thailand, the traditional way of training elephants to obey mahoots involves breaking the elephant's spirit by forcing it into a small cage and then repeatedly hitting and piercing it with sharp spikes. The elephant learns to respond to pain, and mahoots use a stick with a curved spike on the end to control trained elephants. The Park is trying to change this mindset. They train mahoots to treat their charges with love and respect, and teach them to use positive reinforcement to control the elephants in their care. There is a very strong bond that exists between a mahoot at the Park and his elephant. by: toomanyllamas Views[2232] The Park is a perfect place for tourists and visitors to have the experience with elephants that they want, but do so in the elephant's natural environment.
