My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Guatemala | Monday, January 14, 2013 | flickr photos

My obsession with travel and photography began at a young age. I still daydream of working on exotic National Geographic assignments, but have never pursued photography as a career—mostly because it seemed impractical. I also thought I was satisfied using photography as a medium for creative expression—to articulate all that I absorb from an object, an experience, a person, a place. I love the stories photographs tell, and I love communicating through photography.

I work in web design, in a flexible environment that allows me to pursue other interests. Reflecting on years of school and jobs and volunteering and just ordinary life, I realized that in almost every personal and professional endeavor, I find a way to incorporate photography.

The opportunity to be mentored by a skilled and experienced photographer like Jason Edwards would help improve my technique and increase my confidence to move forward on my own travel photography projects.

I have a good eye for subjects and know a bit about framing and composing different kinds of shots. I also enjoy challenges, take direction well, have boundless energy and a curiosity about people and their customs that shows in my work.
