I was staying in Unawatuna, Sri Lanka and I began to feel feverish and ill so decided to go to the hospital in Colombo because the fever did not subside. The results of the initial blood tests indicated Dengue fever and I was admitted to hospital after my platelet count dropped below 100,000. They gave me IV fluids and continued with the blood tests.

Having travelled in Sri Lanka extensively over last 17 years the only thing troubled by was eating inshore seafood(negombo bay)-my advice is only eat deep sea fish-Dengue fever is something I talk about with sinhala peoples and they are petrified of this, all precautions should be adhered too!-funny enough i had grown to believe that this mossie born disease was no longer prelevant on the island-how wrong one can be, along with my home medical practise!
