Loy Krathong Lyrics

THAILAND | Wednesday, 28 November 2007 | Views [51331] | Comments [9]

The Loy Krathong song (written karaoke style) according to my level 8 students:

Wan pen duan sip song nam kor nong tem taling

Raow thung lai chai ying sanook gun jing wan loy krathong.

Loy loy krathong, loy loy kratong

Loy krathong gun leaw kor chern nong keaw oog ma rum wong

Rum wong wan loy krathong, rum wong wan loy krathong

Boon ja song hai raouw sook jai

Boon ja song hai raouw sook jai.

Amazingly, most of my students showed up for class on Saturday. Towards the end of the day, it was hard for me to focus, let alone encourage my students to focus. We needed a break. So my students suggested we sing the Loy Krathong song. As I didn’t know it, they had to teach it to me. First they wrote in on the board. Then we sang it a few times, and eventually they translated it for me.

When moved on to a new activity they wouldn’t let me erase the board without first copying the lyrics so I could “practice”. I better work on that, they are sure to ask me to sing it for them next week. I’ll have to find some teachery thing to get out of it. Such as, “I will only sing the song, if you all pass the level 8 test”, or “only if you only speak English today in class”…

Pop-pop, fizz-fizz, oh what a relief it is!
Stephanie, sounds like fun, but are you sure your students gave you the REAL translation? Wish you had a web cam for that one:)

Perhaps the lyrics could be translated in English to shed light on those who wish to know what they mean. The words rhyme well though.

Thank you.

Our tour guide taught us this song and also the elephant song during our tour in Thailand. Oh how I miss Thailand, hope everything will be back to normal there. Don't lose hope! Many people are praying for Thailand. :)
