I have known Anna for years and despite both working online all day, we have this unspoken agreement that we never use e-mail, and only send letters and postcards from wherever we are travelling.

The other day one arrived early in the morning, before breakfast when the kids were still asleep. Here in Sydney it is winter, so this made me laugh out loud:

"The urge to write has gripped me as my shaky train surges through the burnt out surrey countryside. Add a few more Eucalyptus trees & it could be Australia.

This week Britain's been gripped by heatwave hysteria. Roads are melting, schools are closing, and newspapers are raging. And the temperature? 36°C.

Do you think that someone in Rio, right now, is thinking: "Phew, it's hotter in Bognor Regis than it is here!".

Probably not.

(Perhaps only the Poms & the Aussies will understand why this is amusing!)
