Looking out over the rolling green mountains on the bus ride from the Georgian border to Erzurum (Turkey) Views[15] Seems that Turks have a way of building mosques on beautiful mountains, just like the Georgians and their churches Views[15] Views[16] Views[18] I quickly made my way to Lake Van, where I was welcomed by horrid weather and no-go ferries (much like my arrival at the Caspian port in Turkmenistan!) I camped overnight across from the harbour to Akdamar Island and awoke the next day to perfect blue skies and calm waters! Views[13] Views[13] Views[18] I met some young teachers on the boat ride over to Akdamar Island Views[25] Views[22]
 
The Armenian Akdamar Kilisesi (Church of the Holy Cross) perched on the island was built in the 10th century Views[16] Views[24] The interior dome and walls are adorned with beautiful frescoes of Biblical stories Views[18] Views[20] A little religious juxtaposition... Views[17]
