An overseas trip is almost a rite of passage, and once you have the travel bug, you've usually got it for life, which means planning the next trip is always on your mind. Travelling inevitably results in many of life's great memories – good or bad!

Unfortunately, travel plans don’t always include thinking about the things that could go wrong. Each year Foreign Affairs departments and consular officials handle hundreds of thousands of cases of travellers in difficulty overseas.

There are a few things you can do before you pack your bag and while you're on the road to stop you from becoming one of those unhappy consular statistics.

Keep your wits about you, trust sparingly and keep in touch – with the folks back home, with current events that may affect you, and with fellow travellers who can share tips and warnings.

We can't be with you on your journey, but we're always here to lend a hand with products and services to keep you travelling safely.

Hi Ken, I've tried my best to answer this over on Ask A Nomad.

My 20 year-old daughter would like to go with a girlfriend to visit her father in Brazil (during winter break in mid-March). I'm wondering if there are any safey concerns. At this point, we're not sure what city/location of Brazil other than the father is there for work. Thank you for any information you can provide.
