Capturing the tribes

My Scholarship entry - A day in the life of Indonesia

Indonesia | Wednesday, November 12, 2014 | 5 photos

I started hiking in remote places and saw many beautiful people and their culture completely different from mine. I then started photography trying to capture their essence. Their ethnic fabrics woven by hand, their jewelleries, their gait when walking with huge items on their head, their beautiful smile even when toothless, were just amazing. I love taking portraits of this unique vanishing tribes capturing them before "our modern culture" overtakes their societies.
I love street photography. It allows me to capture that split second expression of people's true reaction and emotions. I speak to them in their natural settings and learned much about their traditions and daily way of life. I sometimes speak the language which helps put them at ease and they will tell me intimate details of their life story.
I would love to have this scholarship opportunity as it will allows me to widen my experience and one day will have my own pictures published. I am a versatile traveller and able to deal with all kinds of living conditions from rural villagers to big cities. I am also highly adaptable when meeting with new people and find that humour goes a long way in establishing a connection.
