Battery's that come with a free switch blade... charge something, then stab someone. Views[53] Workers building concrete roadways inside Zhangzhou Institute of Technology. I love their bamboo hats. Between the hat and the head there is about a three centimeter gap, so they are kept very cool as they work. They also keep their heads dry when it rains. These workers will apparently work all day until 9-10 at night! Views[40] Zhangzhou Institute of Technology campus - the place I will be calling home for the next two and a half months. These are just a few of the buildings though; the campus is huge! Views[48] In the distance you can see huge granite mountains. They are all over this area of China. It's quite comfortable in there now. I've made it quite homely. These guys were stripping sugar cane just outside the restaurant. They gave me some to try. It's not really very nice. Here I am TOWERING over the tiny students of Zhangzhou Institute of Technology. Hehehe. They were amazed by how tall I am. Views[287] A statue of Confucius, (or K'ung-fu-tzu or 孔夫子) within the Zhangzhou Institute of Technology campus. Views[52] More K'ung-fu-tzu. The ground was on a slope here so I couldn't get a very good shot. :/ This statue is right in the middle of the campus grounds. Views[49] View from a class room on the 8th floor at Zhangzhou Institute of Technology. You can see the K'ung-fu-tzu statue from here. Views[43] Spot the foreigner! (Laowai or Waiguoren.) Here I am with a applied English class. I really liked this class, they were lovely. At the end of the lesson they all surrounded me with camera phone and took photos of me. It was very strange for me, but in this part of China westerners are relatively rare so I was a bit of a novelty. Views[226]
 
This is the bike track on the outskirts of Zhangzhou, just behind the college. Views[39] This is a beautiful tree, with spikes on it's branches and pretty pink flowers. I don't know what it's called. Views[40] A little Buddhist temple on the outskirts of the city. Views[49] Stopping along the bike track for some water. Views[51] These guys tied leaves and branches to the sides of their motorbike and then they both hopped on and drove away. Views[47]
 
This is a memorial to the solders of the People's Liberation Army that 'liberated' Zhangzhou from the Kuomintang (Nationalists) during the last year of the Chinese Civil War in 1950. Views[41] Flame flowers and Bougainvilleas outside local government buildings in Zhangzhou city center. Views[53] This is the house that 1st Chairman of the Communist Party of China, Máo Zédōng, lived in when he stayed in Zhangzhou. Views[52] Dried foods at the whole sale markets, Pi Fa Shi Chang. (Including dried prawn and squid.) Views[40] This painting dates back to the early Qing Dynasty (1644 to 1912). We were invited to view it by the shop owner that is one of June's relatives. I can't really say or spell his name. I'm not sure if he has an English name. I think it's really cool that you get to give your self an English name in China. Some of the male students have given them selves really weird ones like Dog. I've asked some of the students to give me a Chinese name. :) Views[41]
 
Hanging in the markets. There were heaps of scooters buzzing around in the narrow streets and beeping at the pedestrians - it was quite annoying. Views[46] TINY FRUIT!! They seem to have miniature (and giant) versions of normal fruit in China. The fruit in Fujian is especially good. As you can see, this is a small pineapple (very sweet!!) and a tiny mandarin (a little tart hehe). Views[46] Lucy, at the little tea place we visited. Views[257] This is Lucy, one the the students from the college. She's awesome. She speaks very good English and is very open and friendly. Her and I get along very well. She took me out and showed me around the back streets of Zhangzhou. This photo was taken at a little tea place we went to. Views[40] A worker taking a lunch time snooze.... he CAN'T be comfortable?? Beautfuil stone carvings on the steps up to the city pagoda in Zhangzhou. Views[38] A farmer leading his water buffalo through the city. This is right outside the college I'm staying at. I see this dude every day, he's very friendly and LOVES being photographed. Apparently he's turned into quite a star with a lot of the foreigner teaches that stay at the college taking snaps of him. He's such a cam whore. Hehehe. Aww, he's lovely. Views[38] This is the pagoda in the center of Zhangzhou. It's old and they haven't really looked after it; the paint is peeling and parts of it are crumbling. A nice far away shot, so you can't see how sweaty I was that day! ;) Views[44] No, these aren't homeless people, they just didn't make it back home in time for the obligatory Chinese post-lunch snooze. Views[39] This is a Confucius temple in the heart of Zhangzhou. A lot of it was taken apart during the time Mao, but has since been reconstructed using the original material. I'm not a huge fan of Confucius, a lot of his 'teachings' were very sexist, but it's still interesting to learn about. Views[41]
 
I know this looks really quite lovely, but it's actually an open sewer in the middle of town. The WORST smell in the entire world, but I braved it (and traffic) to get this nice shot. Views[39] On of my favorite things about China is that a lot of people (only the the poorer people obviously) will hang their clothes out to dry in the middle of the street. I think it's funny that in a country of certain conservative views things like spitting, going to the toilet and hanging your undies out - all in the street - are all perfectly acceptable, bu no one ever talks about sex. I think the contrast with the west is very amusing and interesting. Views[42] This is one of the colleges in Zhangshou. Views[37] No, these aren't homeless people, they just didn't make it back home in time for the obligatory Chinese post-lunch snooze. Views[41] DON'T LOOK AT THIS IF YOU HAVE A WEAK STOMACH! I know it's a late warning, but it's the best I could do. This is a fertilized egg with a tiny chicken embryo inside. It's called 'wang ji dan' and It's been dropped in boiling, salted water to cook it. This is an old traditional dish is some parts of China (not all) and some believe that if you eat lots of these as a child, you'll be stronger and healthier as an adult. Personally I think even LOOKING at them is enough to make you feel sick. :/ Don't worry I only took a photo of it, I didn't eat it. Views[42]
