Shift in Sensibilities

My Scholarship entry - Dakshini Prayash

India | Monday, November 24, 2014 | 5 photos

I had always rushed through life, tackling many things at the same time. Then, a few years ago, I moved back to my hometown in India after being away at university in England. In an attempt to re-familiarize myself with my surroundings, I took pictures with a second-hand camera my father gave me. Photography taught me to stop and appreciate life’s seemingly mundane moments.
Narrative mediums have always intrigued me and I studied Film and Literature at university. I love making images that capture moments in my life, or someone else’s that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. These every-day moments are the ones that connect people, and I’ve started believing that photographing them can make a real difference. I’m passionate about bringing greater issues to light by capturing the fleeting yet significant instances life offers. I love that I can share my images and the feelings they convey with anyone, using photography as a tool to transcend barriers of culture and language.
I’m hoping this opportunity to learn from Jason will help me improve my technique, as well as give me a glimpse into the life of a photographer working in the field.
