Where in the world is Laura Mansfield?

Never Give Up

VENEZUELA | Tuesday, 23 June 2009 | Views [61]

So, I learned the first of many lessons. My mom calls it persistence, a quality I get from my father. I pretty much give my success to an emotional breakdown. I drive to DC wednesday afternoon and spend thursday and friday mornings frantically playing hangman games with a good friend, Wes, in the Venezuelan embassy's waiting room. The first time I show up at the dmv-like window and say my name, the woman responds "oh you're laura" ...so I have a reputation already.

After much distress, and a crying fit where I had to leave the embassy...I got my Visa. The woman handed it to me very apprehensively, in a motherly way - telling me to be safe.

So after a bitter-sweet weekend (stressed by the Visa process, but also glad to be spending some time in DC with good food and great company), I headed to a cabin in the Shennendoah woods for an eve. The morning after, I headed home for a couple days to gather myself and pack a bit more.

Here I am, Visa in hand, ready to depart. Its so surreal. After thinking about this trip for so long, it's here. I'm doing it. Living my dream.
