Tonight's the night the world begins again (except for Keera, for whom it began yesterday)

Fethiye

Tuesday 2nd May I packed up this morning and then headed to the waterfront to catch a dolmus to Fethiye. On arrival I caught another dolmus (which is by the way a public transport minibus that just goes continuously, no timetable, really handy) out to the hotel Mediteran , a 10min drive or 30min walk. To get there you have to go through a ship building and repair yard which was quite interesting.

The hotel is nice and I get a Fez discount which is good. I was a little put out though when I was shown to a triple room (supposedly a dorm) which was occupied by only one other person, a guy. Now I have no problem with mixed dorms but there’s usually more than just two people in them!

I headed back into town (walking this time) to have a look around. Fethiye is nice but as a port town there aren’t really any beaches so I had to make use of the hotel pool instead. I went out to dinner with Bec (whom I met in Pammukale), James (mystery room sharer) and his mate Mike (New Zealanders). We went to a really cheap local place and had ice-cream on the way back – lemon, yum!

Wednesday 3rd May  After a leisurely breakfast I headed into town to look at the various sights. FIrstly I visited the theatre which was hugely unimpressive. I then went up into the hills to see the Lycian tombs. These were carved into the hillside, Petra style though on a much smaller scale. The walk up there was the best bit, I went through all these little back residential streets, they were really quaint.

I went to the big supermarket 'Gima' for stuff for lunch, found hummus and some fresh bread and it was delicious. I spent the rest of the afternoon by the pool, and in an attempt at something other than laziness I swam laps. I think the pool was about 15m so I did 100 lengths - I figure that even if it was shorter I swam at least 1km. I had a yummy dinner of saksuka (aubergine and potatoe in an onion and tomato sauce) at the hotel resturant and then went on the net to check for job offers (6, its a new reccord!). Bought some vodka on my way home for the cruise tomorrow.
