The area around the village of Imlil in the Atlas Mountains is stunning, so we spent several days hiking there. One day we headed out into some neighbouring hills. The trail that we were on came down to a road and as we were crossing it, we saw some of the local children coming towards us. At first they were a little shy, but it didn’t take long before they wanted to show their skills with the football…and only a couple of minutes more before they were happy to play a quick game with us.

We’d been hiking in the Atlas Mountains for several hours - almost all of it uphill! The landscape changed slowly, from many trees and plants at the village to just small stands amongst the red tinted soil higher up. As I was tiring, we came to the top of the mountain and I was well rewarded with the stunning view into the next valley and to the surrounding peaks. What I didn’t expect to see was a little café with stone walls and a patio – and a fantastic view!

Often when people think of Morocco, they picture the desert and the markets. What they may not realise is that it is a very diverse country with many different climates and landscapes. High up in the Atlas Mountains, the local people work the fields that have been cut into the sides of the hills. The cooler climate is imminently suitable for the crops, creating a patchwork of green across the hillsides, stretching out towards the mountain peaks.
