The best of times, the worst of times

NEW ZEALAND | Thursday, 9 Jun 2011 | Views [767] | Comments [3]

So, that's our Africa trip over :( Thank you everyone for reading all these blogs - I hope the Rwanda ones weren't too much. Mostly good times, only a couple of bad moments, and all in all, the trip of a lifetime (until our next one). Best moments ... Read more >

Homeward bound

NEW ZEALAND | Tuesday, 7 Jun 2011 | Views [343]

Next, long trip home to New Zealand.  12 hours to Melborne, 1 hour stopover, 3 hours to Auckland. 4.5 hours driving to Kaitaia.  Trying to adjust to freezing cold weather after following the sun for nearly a year.  Great to see family including Turkish ... Read more >

Dubai

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES | Sunday, 5 Jun 2011 | Views [500]

Dubai, our last stopover before the long journey home. Our room had been booked so we were upgraded to a three bedroom apartment with a washing machine. Dubai full of towering skyscrapers wrapped, without exception, in mirror glass.  Contains tallest ... Read more >

Toilets, toilets, toilets

ETHIOPIA | Friday, 3 Jun 2011 | Views [786]

To our delight (not) we discovered that on our return trip to Dubai from Rwanda we were scheduled for a 13 hour layover in Addis Ababa - our least favorite city. Ide had the clever idea that as we had to be there anyway we may as well take advantage ... Read more >

Farewell Rwanda

RWANDA | Thursday, 2 Jun 2011 | Views [1241]

After observing basket weaving and banana beer making yesterday and visiting the Golden Monkeys the day before, we headed back from Musanze. Before we arrived in the twelve hour purgatory of sallow lighting, seriously bad food, and two inch bugs zapping ... Read more >

Village activities

RWANDA | Wednesday, 1 Jun 2011 | Views [276]

Today we participated in some village activities - including basket weaving and banana beer making.  It was more interesting than I thought it was going to be, and especially pleasant because there were no other tourists there. ... Read more >

Golden Monkeys

RWANDA | Tuesday, 31 May 2011 | Views [432]

Our third hike through mountains in as many days - fortunately not nearly as long as the other two.  The monkeys were all around us, but moved so quickly that they were difficult to catch on camera.

Gorillas - a LOT of gorillas [author: Ide]

RWANDA | Sunday, 29 May 2011 | Views [1327]

(narrator: Ide] First let me say that I have yet to get hooked on the social media revolution, as most Facebook friends can attest.  Rwanda has been an interesting trip to say the least. From the infrastructure - which stretched beyond the capital ... Read more >

The road to Musanze

RWANDA | Saturday, 28 May 2011 | Views [1088]

After an average dinner the night before (soggy pasta with ham and cheese), and a really average breakfast in the morning (soggy toast with jam), we headed off to Ruhengari, or Musanze as it is now called, in part due to the President's desire to avoid ... Read more >
