I got cut off last night mid-sentence because my food came, then I found internet, and then I was exhausted so I went home to sleep. So let me try to recover my train of thought:
Zagreb, unlike its Eastern neighbours, is a (mostly) clean, foreigner-friendly city. The center is actually full of tourists, but is still nice enough to wander through without being run over by tour groups. I kind of like it.
Apparently there's also some sort of festival in town right now, so I imagine it's not usually quite this full. I found a hostel with the help of the tourist agency when I arrived in town last night. It's on a street that's being torn up and replaced, so it's kind of weird getting there, stepping over rubble for a few blocks.
When I was booking my room they asked if my roommate would be a problem and pointed to a Middle-Eastern looking name on the paper. I'm still not sure what problems they were expecting. My roommate turned out to be a British guy who just rode his motorcycle up from Dubrovnik which, incidentally, I now know why I can't find it on a rail map. I think I'll have to come back by car or by boat some time to check it out, as everyone seems to love it. Before it gets too touristy, of course.
Today I'm going down the coast to Split, then probably back to Yagreb and on into Slovenia and Austria, ending up in Salzburg. I think I'm going to buy a hat there. I keep wishing I had one every time it rains, and it's been raining a lot. After Salyburg, where I won't end up until at least 4.00 tomorrow, I'll pop over into Deutschland to recharge my phone. I might try getting tickets for a concert on the 14. too, if I can figure out where from. They're all sold out online is the thing.
Then It's back to Ljubljana for a night and then a night train to Switzerland. I was planning on staying in Slovenia on Saturday night to go "experience Slovenian culture" in the mountains, but unfortunately then I'd never make it to interlaken on the 10. Hrmph. I've got a train to catch.
