poem- on the train from urumqi

Watching the world pass by,

surrounded by strangers,

thoughts run through my head,

loneliness fills me

even though surrounded by people.

lost in thought,

trees zip by,

land ravish by weather,

blank trees, white hills, frozen dirt,

family mingle and play and chat,

talking a language I don't understand,

with habits that are strange and unfamilar.

sleeping hunched over a table,

knees groaning in discomfort,

see sunset and sunrise,

moving time zones without moving.

white and blue snow,

memory of fireworks still in my head,

mind doesn't recognise two days have gone,

hours go by in a daze,

one white speck in a sea of yellow.
