Documentary Scholarship 2011 entry

Poverty – it feeds on children, and breeds in our backyard. But we do nothing about it. This video is a humble attempt to look deeper into the life of a young garbage collector - his childhood, dreams, and ambitions. It is also a call for those more fortunate to react. Lately, reaction, something so natural, has been replaced with indifference. After drastically having our society restructured before our eyes, we simply look up doe-eyed and confused at the wickedness around us. Yet we have ample reason to simply ask, “Why?” and to question the sanity of our world

My name is Maheen Sadiq and I am an amateur filmmaker. However, this is my first real attempt at documentary-style filmmaking. Originally from Pakistan, I look at what is happening in my country and I strongly believe that media is a vital instrument for democracy as democracy survives on education and awareness.

This scholarship is an opportunity for me to further my passion for travel, adventure, and challenge. I have a keen interest in global affairs and I believe in the documentary filmmaker's power to build bridges and create dialogue between countries and people.
