Canada: Lake Huron Storm Went storm chasing: found one! While out on one of my many adventures, a sunny walk on the beach turned more dramatic as the storm moved in. The alarming fall in the lake’s water level made me realize that I was seeing climate change in action.

 3. A snug harbour in the Saugeen River for Just-n-Time, one of the last commercial gillnet fishing boats on Lake Huron. Huron is second only to Lake Erie for commercial fishing in the Great Lakes, but there is conflict between recreational fishing and the Saugeen Ojibway First Nation, whose lands are on the south shore of the Lake and the adjacent Georgian Bay. A five-year agreement signed in the spring of 2013 between the Saugeen and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources addresses this issue. .

2. Lake Huron is the third largest freshwater lake on Earth, with a surface area of more than 59,000 square kilometres. Its average depth is 59 metres, but the water levels are falling.

4. The storm closes in. Until the 1920s, Lake Huron's piscine food chain was ruled by the lake trout, which fed on the plankton-eating cisco. When the lake was invaded by smelt, alewives, and sea lampreys, the trout were brought to the edge of extinction. In the 1980s, Chinook salmon were imported from the West Coast but now the alewives they eat have dwindled. In an illustration of the cyclical nature of the world, the lake trout population is increasing again.
