The Balcony
We arrived Saturday night in Byron Bay and we were smelly, tired and hungry because of the trip. Rick wanted a refreshing shower first, but I wanted something to eat because it was already late. I didn’t want to take the risk the restaurants closed while we searched for a place to refresh.
We had diner in a very nice restaurant, The Balcony in the main street of Byron Bay. The food is really excellent, good quantities and well presented, the staff are conscientious and the ambience is relaxed and breaths out the good atmosphere of the ‘flower power‘. Don’t forget to try the squid!
The waiter who served us was extremely nice and very Gay , he suggested to Rick that he tried his ’Spicy chorizo sausage!” I couldn’t hold my laughter while Rick’s face went red, as he prepared to leave, happy to go hungry!!
As you already know, we spend our next night at the Villa Resort.
It rained practically the whole day and we just hung around in Byron Bay. People who we have met all recommended us to visit Byron Bay because it was a nice place to stay, it would give us the possibility to surf, relax and tan etc. Byron Bay’s lighthouse stands on the most eastern place of Australia; that’s worth a visit despite the rain.
I can assure you: It’s no fun when it’s raining and we certainly recommend not to go there when you’re a smoker. Since the first of July this year it’s prohibited to smoke in or near any bar, pub, restaurant or whatever. The only place where you can smoke is hidden behind a bush, out of sight of all the disgusted people.
Back in the Villa Resort we met Mr Mate who was looking for his son! His son vanished five years ago from Adelaide and never came home again. We asked him to show us a picture so we maybe recognised him. We didn’t see him in the streets of Byron Bay, but that is not surprising it’s a place of lost souls and those that are clearly ‘lost’ all look very similar.
We decided to spend another couple of days in Byron Bay hoping to get a tan, when will the sun turn up??

Wicked Weasel and the Art FactoryWe went to a shop in town, Wicked Weasel‘, where you can get the tiniest, sexiest bikini’s and underwear you can imagine, they barely cover your embarrassment let alone anything else!! For a guy it’s like walking in a candy shop and for women (or men who like to be dressed as woman) it’s fun to try them on. If you buy a Wicked Weasel bikini and make a picture of you in it and send it to them, you might end with your pictures published on their website, and a prize. After buying a couple of bikini’s we went to the Art Factory. This is one of the most popular backpackers hangouts. It’s known by backpackers all over the world. When you enter the place it’s like you are going back to the 60‘s. It’s a little village on it’s own. You can chill out in the restaurant Zula, the Lounge Cinema and Spa Club. There is also a place where you can get lessons of Yoga and other relaxation techniques.
We spend almost the whole afternoon in Zula. You can use wireless internet over there. We updated our blog. Downloading the pictures takes a lot of time. Following a short internet search and several telephone calls we decided to do some horse riding, mustering cattle and wild horses at Myella Farm, 120 km’s land inwards from Rockhampton (Rocky). In the meantime we had an excellent lunch. The food is good and not too expensive. They also serve vegetarian food which we didn’t consume, meat is not just murder it tastes good!!
Later that evening we ate some tapas in the ‘Balcony ‘ had several excellent ‘Bloody marys’ we then went back to the Villa Resort to do some laundry. Mr Mate was sipping from a glass of wine in the communal area/laundry and smiled at us when he saw us. Hurray His son had contacted him and they met that afternoon. He was delighted and was celebrating the reunion after five years of painful absence. We were happy for him and we ended up in a conversation about places in Australia which are worthwhile a visit and diving.
In the communal area we met Darren and Carly with whom we went to the cinema of the Art Factory: “You, me and Dupree“. Really funny. The cinema is really cool. Stars and planets of the galaxy surround you when you enter the cinema and the seats are covered in faux cow. They are made for two and you can rest your feet on a step. After the movie we went directly to bed because we wanted to leave early for the trip to the Myella Farm 900 km’s further North.
