The Beach

INDIA | Sunday, 23 December 2007 | Views [738]

I had a lie down in my new room for an hour or so and a shower. It was cold water but that is no problem it is very hot and sticky here in Mumbai at the moment.

Afterwards I took a long lazy walk along the promenade to Chowpatty Beach. This was very pleasant and very interesting. There is a lot of pollution, and it was hard to see across the bay through the haze, but the walk was nice. I then visited a museum at Mani Bhavan which is located at the house that had been Ghandi's Bombay base - the home of a good friend of his and the place from which many of his campaigns were incubated. It is basically just a series of photographs and descriptions on the walls, a library, a recreation of his bare room and an exhibition of dioramas about major event in his life. The area it is in is actually a very nice district, with large old (but well maintained) residential houses.

Walking back south in the evening as the sun set was beautiful - maybe the haze from the polution was a factor but it was a lovely view over the bay. There were thousands of locals out strolling as the air cooled. I sat on the beach for a while as the sun dipped into the ocean to the west, a fullish moon had risen in the East. For some reason I didn't notice the noise of the cars - it was peaceful and pleasant. I read a chapter or so of "Sons and Lovers" by D H Lawrence. The last in the trilogy of my unread Year 12 books and was in a very good frame of mind.

I went to subway for dinner (which is at the Cinema). I've hardly eaten salad since I have been away because you are always warned that it may be washed in local water - but I took the risk. I got half way through a large iced-tea which was wonderful until remembering that you shouldn't drink anything with ice in it. So we will see tommorow if that effects me.

I was quite tired -
