Travels

Mumbai again

INDIA | Saturday, 22 December 2007 | Views [652]

Once I was washed, not showered the room only came with the Indian "bucket shower" that I had come to expect only at really cheap places, I didn't feel like lying in the tiny room so went out for walk to look for some breakfast. I don't think I mentioned that in the rushing around pune I didn't eat so hadn't had anything since breakfast the day before. Nothing was open for a proper breakfast though so I got something from a street vendor and took a look around the streets. Many people sleep on the streets here - it is very hot and the pavements were full of people sleeping under old blankets amongst the rubbish.

As it turned out I had a very pleasant day. I wandered the "Fort" area of mumbai and stopped for a long time in one of the maidans watching some cricket. It was "real"/Official cricket with everyone in whites and umpires etc. It seemed a quite good standard. I finished reading 'The Great Gatsby' in record time. It is another book from Year 12 that I didn't read. There are great bookshops here in mumbai and many many street vendors selling English books second hand. I am carrying about 6 books at the moment and have to get rid of some. I will post back the lonely planets: the India one is a brick and was borrowed otherwise I would chuck it; The Nepal one is in good condition and I think I have more to do there.

I went to my room for a lie down in the afternoon and started to sense trouble. Someone was in the room next to me watching TV. Actually it was worse than that - the rooms probably used to be one and the dividing wall had a strip air conditioner that was half in each room. I had the power supply on my side, but he had the controls. I tried to lay down but the room was freezing and his TV had that loud Hindi music playing. OK I've put up with worse - though for a lot cheaper, but the straw that broke the camels back was when he lit up a cigarette and the smoke came in my room through the crack near the Air Con.

I decided there was nothing I could do in the short term - so just went out again and decided not to come back until it was late and he would be asleep. I went back to the coffee shop, drinking caps and reading my book then went to the movies to see "I am legend" with Will Smith. The movie was in English and the experience was very similar to home. It was much cheaper $4.00 though, Other differences was that I had a reserve ticket, they have an intermission where you get to buy more popcorn ! and people leave their mobiles on - one guy two seats up chatting away merrily for about 10 mins throught the movie.

It was very late when I went back to the room hoping to sleep.. but no such luck.
