Cuzco, ancient Inca capital and current Gringo capital, was pleasant and charming. We spent just a few days in "navel of the world" between Manu and Salkantay, and aside from Dr. C being sick from the altitude, we had a good visit to Cuzco and the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The cathedral was worth the tour to see how Catholicism and the pre-Colombian religions intermixed during the conversion of the Quechua indians. The architecture in the city is quite impressive as there are still remants of the Incan stonework, and in some cases, the Spanish colonial architecture is built right on top. Even after all of the earthquakes in the region, the Incan stone has survived.
Our day trip to the Sacred Valley felt a bit like a school field trip, but ruins are ruins, and there is something always special about these places. We saw everything from grain warehouses to sun temples to the king's bedroom. All of the gringos and tourists aside, we enjoyed Cuzco!
