Por favor, digalo mas despacio

Se trata de que tanto he vivido que quiero vivir otro tanto. It's a question of having lived so much that I want to live that much more. -Pablo Neruda

It's Not Only the Llamas That Spit...

The three weeks with the Coopers flew by, and Ben and I find ourselves now in the very north of Peru, mere hours from the border of Ecuador.  We had amazing times trekking through the Amazon, up high mountain passes and deep canyons, and we finally laid eyes on THE star of South America, Machu Picchu.  There is so much to write about and about 1000 pics to post, but currently we're distracted by the sun, sand and sea.

After a surprisingly fun time in Lima (more musings to follow on the Peruvian capital), Ben and I flew an hour and a half north to Piura.  A note of warning to any would-be travellers to this city: watch out at the airport.  After disembarking from our uneventful flight on the local airliner, AeroCondor, we collected our bags which had thankfully arrived and went outside to meet the local driver who had been sent from our hostal.  Apparently he wasn't that official of a driver and had parked his taxi outside of the security gates, which proved to be a problem for us that balmy night.  Once outside the gates, we were approached and then pestered by two children, a girl about 8 yrs. old and a boy about 6 yrs. old.  They followed us to the car and attempted to load our bags and beg for money, anything.  They had first bothered Ben but as I went to my side of the car to get in, they kept trying to close and open the car door. The boy kept holding his hand out for money and when the girl reached in through the open window and started to touch and grab at my face, I had had enough.  I firmly said no and to stop, at which point the boy spat in my face.  A lot.  Pretty much right on my mouth.  Ben then chased the little kid down, caught up with him and hopefully scared the bejeezus out of him.  There was a lot of yelling at the kids by our taxi driver, but what else could we do at that point?  It was a 6 yr. old kid with serious problems.  I only hope that he doesnt try that shit again with other travellers, but Piura is a pretty desperate place.  Not worth a visit our opinion, so it's a good thing we left early the next morning for Mancora and the beach.

If a spitting kid is the worst that happens to us on our 6 month journey, then we're pretty lucky.  For now, no worries at the beach!
