Por favor, digalo mas despacio

Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

URUGUAY | Sunday, 9 March 2008 | Views [3318]

Earlier in the week, Ben and I ventured over the River Plate to Colonia del Sacramento, the old port town in Uruguay.  Originally colonized by the Portugese, the town is charming, quiet and quaint.  We took a slow, 3-hour ride on the Buquebus ferry from BA to Colonia.  The ferry reminded me a bit of a cruise ship from 1985, definitely an interesting way to travel.  The weather did not look promising when we left BA in gray skies and drizzle.  We had hoped to visit the beach in Colonia for a few days as well as wander around the town, but as soon as we arrived in Colonia, we were met with a downpour that seemed to last the entire time we were there.

The clouds did break on the second day long enough for us to ramble about the town, which is very picturesque, and take a long bike ride up the river coast to an ugly Sheraton and an old bull-fighting/casino/horse racetrack complex.  We only made it to the beach for about an hour, as the next day was solid rain.  We were so bummed that we opted to take an earlier, faster ferry back to BA.  Colonia is a lovely town though, and Uruguay is a great day excursion for anyone visiting BA.  They also brew a very tasty Patricia cerveza, although Ben seems to think it tasted like Busch Light.
