Costa Atlantico

If porteños love anything more than Buenos Aires, it´s getting out of Buenos Aires. Last week, Ben and I headed to the Atlantic Coast for the sleepy beach town of Villa Gesell, via our first bus. Travel by bus has its ups and downs, but it´s quite economical travel. Many of these buses are now equiped with coche cama (sleeper seats), movies, and food service. They can be clean, new and comfortable, like our first bus, or crowded, old and dirty, like our return bus, but all in all, it´s the way to go.
Villa Gesell was anything but a sleepy beach town, as it seemed like half of the population of Argentina was there for the summer. Our hostel, Residencial Viya, was but a few short blocks from the beach and right near the main drag, Avenida 3. It was on Avenida 3 that Ben found his favorite horse racing game (kind of like skee-ball, sink the ball and advance the horse to win). Ben did manage to beat all of the 8 year olds after about 10 games.
Of course, the highlight of the trip was the beach itself. We were blessed with mostly blue skies and sunshine, but on the day the pictures were taken, a HUGE thunderstorm blew our way. We tried to ride out the storm under our umbrella, but ended up getting drenched and taking shelter in a bakery (did we mention there are bakeries everywhere in this country?). The sun came out on our last day, and for all of the sun protection we wore, we still walked away with a few sunburns and tan lines. For all our loved ones still stuck in snow and cold, we were thinking of you!
