Silver is everywhere in Taxco

Silver is everywhere in Taxco

We didn't really want to go to Cuernavaca but there were some campgrounds nearby we could use as a base for exploring the area.  The climate certainly is better than Mexico City.  It's shorts and T-shirt weather with banana trees and many flowers.

Taxco, about 50 miles south, is a picturesque hill town of winding streets and whitewashed buildings seemingly piled one atop the other.  It is famous for its nearly pure silver and was the site of the first Spanish mining operation in the New World.  The mines are still in operation but the miners are currently on strike.  The jewelery shops, however, are all in operation and if you are of the mind you can get some great deals.
