Parabens para mim / Happy Birthday to me

Yesterday, for me, was my birthday. The comemoration was simple but really nice. I did some pasta with shrimp and had lunch with B., because Elida is alergic to it, and some really nice wine (first one I drank here but not because the wine here isn't good. I just don't know how to choose). And at night we had Happy Birthday song, chocolate cake and even a candle (that it wasn't lit because we forgot about matches!).

A great birthday all the way. I miss the people from the other side of the world, but not the place.

Devia ser primavera / It was suppose to be Spring

The Spring here started at the begining of September. We had beautiful days with lots of sun but at the last week of the month everything changed. Rain, wind, cold. At the first weekend of October we had the biggest snow in the North Island in 25 years! There was people stranded in road for 14 hours! Is this the global warming?!

A foto eh a ilustracao do frio dentro de casa. A Elida nao conta, a energia dela a mantem aquecida. Euzinha, to congelando com pilhas de roupas!

The photo is to show how cold is inside the house. Elida doens't count because her energy level keeps her warm. Little me, I'm freezen inside tons of clothes!

This one I couldn't just let go. At 15:00h of this Sunday we had hail and a bit of snow in Wellingyon! At least at the higher neighbourhoods, like Thorndon. Ok, it was less than 5 minutes but we are a month on the official spring here. These last few days have been quite weird.

Domingo Glorioso / Glourious Sunday

It's Father's day today, Sep.5th, here in NZ. And the Sunday it's wonderful, with a sky without a single cloud, almost no wind and a 14.C temperature. I spent the morning walking by the Harbour and the Oriental Parade. I stopped by a book fair and ate a wonderful chocolate ice cream. Sorry, I forgot to take the photo machine today... :P

P.S. Ate fiquei coradinha!

P.S. I even have rosen cheeks!

That's was a quick trip I did just because I want to know the Westfield shopping center at Queensgate in Lower Hutt. It's a big mall for here but nothing close to the ones I know from Rio de Janeiro. It's fun just the same.

Paraparaumu

This Sunday I tried a longer trip: I choose a beach city on the coast of the Tasman Sea. This is the sea between NZ and Australia. I took a train at Wellington Station and really enjoyed the scenery along the way. The train traveld closed to the coast, so if you seat at the left side of it (almost always the left side is better for views)you get a beautiful view almost all the way. You cross a few cities and neighbourhoods along but is amazing how small they all feel. The trip took less than an hour (55 min) even with 13 stops between Wellington and Paraparaumu. I like to travel by train and I always think that, besides Europe, no country really takes advantage of this mode of transportation.

The weather this day wasn't great. It was cloudy and windy when I left Wellington and I caught some drops of rain when I arrived at Paraparaumu. But even so the trip was worth it.

Like everywhere I visit so far (except for Wellington itself), the train station and the bus stop are in front of a shopping center. There's a mall and few other stores around and the real city is beyond this first siren song. :D

I took a bus to the beach because I couldn't tell by the maps how far it would be and I was afraid of the rain too. As most of the buses around here, it goes around and around through out side roads and the community, but it took me less than 15 minutes to get to the beach. The return trip was much more a straight line and it showed me that is completely possible to walk from the station to the beach, specially if the weather was good.

So achei bonitinho.

The bus left me in a back street from the beach and I started to walk around. There's a lot of symbols on the floor and the trash cans, a kind of bird, that I think has something to do with the name of the region: Kapiti Bay. I didn't do a throught search to confirm it, sorry. I just thought it was cute. You can see a photo of it at the album listed on the right side bar.

The street in front of the beach has some cafes and bars and lots of apartments. Nothing outside the big cities like Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch seemed to build anything too tall, 5 stores high seem to be the most to go, so this apartments were just 3 stores high. I think this is great because there's never a wall covering the view.

There's a pathway running all the extend of the beach, or at least as far as I could see, and lots of dunes and native plants. The tide was low, so there was a large spread of sand. And around here, for the most beaches, you can came in it with a car. A bit weird to see cars driving along on the sand, but whatever. I walked around a bit, did my ritual of touching the sea, but I didn't stay much because of the wind. I took the bus back to the station when the rain started.

At the station I found out the train was 45 minutes late because one of the had broken down at Paraparaumu's station and had to wait for the next one to come by and rescue it. The other train arrived, pulled the broken one at its end and back on the track we went. It was all a great adventure because it was a Sunday. Something like that happened during the week would really throw out everybody's schedule.

I arrived latter than I expected in Wellington with lots of rain and wind to make the end of the afternoon really cold. I waited around for another 15 minutes for a bus to take me closer to home because I wasn't in the mood to walk back in the rain and being pushed around by the wind.

It was the longest trip I took so far but I'm loving to do these day trips.

But I also must say, the wind around here could carry a less... let's say, earthy person. :D

This Saturday I went out of Wellington. I pass trough a suburb full of beautiful houses - Newlands, and I end up in Johnsonville, a town a little bit bigger and still full of pretty houses.
Experiencias com o tempo / Experiences with weather

Eh interessante reparar as diferencas no tempo.

It’s interesting to pay attention to the weather differences. The sun around here seems never to complete hide. Even with rain or cloudy, the sun is always peeking from behind the grey clouds. It’s really nice. But the wind, this one is mighty powerful. Today my scarf was almost ripped off me even if it was really well tied around my neck and I saw a plastic bag being sucked up high into the sky like it was full of gas. But all in all, what impressed me most is the sun light. The way it shines is completely different of what I was used to. I don’t know if it’s because we are so South, closer to Antarctica than I ever thought I would be, or the air here is less polluted, the truth is the light here is different and the sky has beautiful and different hues of blues. And I was informed that this light changes with the seasons. So let’s see how it will be in the summer.

Late this night there was an earthquake at the sea, south of Wellington that woke up a lot of people here. Me? I was sleeping and I continued to sleep. I only found out about it in the morning, through another Brazilian in Wellington Twitter.

Petone is a very nice little town near by Wellington. The cities can watch each other from across the bay and, by bus, took me half an hour to reach it. It was my first excursion out of Wellington and I loved to discover this place. It’s small, with that feeling of “one big street and nothing more” but I felt at home there. It was a place that gave me the feeling I would love to live there. I’m planning new excursions to other nearby towns. Let’s see if I find out more pearls like that and if I’ll fall in love with all of them.

The excursion was last week that’s the reason for the date here. I’m trying to keep this blog organized even if I’m a bit lazy to write on it.

Grande passeio.

Today my hosts were feeling better and decided to go back to their routine of daily walks. So we ate breakfast at a restaurant and then I was introduced to the Botanic Garden. We reached it through Cablecar and then we came back down walking slowly. The sun was delicious, with a blue sky without any clouds and the place is gorgeous. Great day.

Sunday we went for a walk near the sea on the chic street of Oriental Parade. Nice houses, restaurants and all the movement you would expect of a Sunday by the sea. I did my ritual of wetting my hand in the sea. I’m collecting these moments: I dipped my fingers at the South Atlantic (various beaches at Brazilian coast), North Atlantic (Miami in a trip when I was little), North Sea (The Netherlands), Mediterranean Sea (Nice), North Pacific (Santa Monica, Los Angeles) and finally South Pacific (Wellington). I’m going around the world through the beaches! And I don’t even like to tan!

Desculpem o atraso no post. Vamos ver se volto a manter o ritmo.

Sorry about the delay on this post. Let’s see if I manage to keep the rhythm.

Outro passeio / Another walk

And I went to walk again yesterday, Thursday. More of the same. But it's good to get to know a new place, right? This post is more of an excuse to show off the new photos on the album. Something interesting: NZ gain new land whenever there is a big earthquake. In 1840 the sea came all the way up to where today is the middle of a big street. And talk about be on the same wave... I went out with a big coat and my friend was using a T-shirt, saying the day was too hot! It was 15.C! I managed to walk around with the coat open but, never the less...

Yesterday, Wednesday, it was another beautiful cloudless day. The wind still tried to push me away but the walking was worth it. The distances are a bit misleading: you check the map and think it's far away but is really quickie to walk by. Maybe it's a question of get used to the layout of the city and its size. I finally went out with the photo machine! My photos are never great but I, at least, register the way aroud. I hope I'll be able to do some more today.

The weather is awful again today (Tuesday) but there`re promises of sun for tomorrow (Wednesday) and if everything works out, I'll have a borrowed photo machine to take some touristic photos! :D

Everybody is getting better around here.
Aquele lugar que vc preferia nao conhecer / That place you prefer you'd never go to

Saturday started cloudy, windy and chilly. Nothing much if we didn't had to go out to a place everybody wishes never to visit. Bruno is still quite sick, not being able even to eat, so we called the health line (they have a direct hot line here!) and they direct us to a emergency clinic. The doctor there was quite nice and said it sounded like a secundary infection, nothing directly linked with the original flu. Back home with our sick boy and a big list of medicines. Let's hope he improves soon enough. Being sick is always bad but now B&E are linking this disease with the trip to Brasil. I don't think they will be back there any time soon.

Bruno is really sick because he won't even joke about having two girls taking care of him. :/

Ainda aqui / Still here

For a moment, today, I thought I would be taken away by the vicious wind here. I held up to a street lamp so I wasn't pushed. You already notice that the sun didn't show up today? Some clouds and a dangerous wind was what I found in the streets today. So I cut my walking short. Still no photos. Comiserations.

Today was a beautiful day here. A sky completly blue, not one cloud to be seen, I could even find the moon around. I walked a lot today, enjoying the weather. Under the sun was a bit hot but in the shadows or by the corners of the streets the wind was treacherous. I'm impressed how the city seems empty, a bit like Rio de Janeiro during a long holiday. But without the fear. Actually, the emptiness is the common ground here. To find a full street is something for the business center of the town. I felt right at home walking there today, with lots of people colliding with me. I hope the weather keeps like that because I would love to go walk by the Harbour tomorrow.

My hosts, B&E are really bad with the flu. The trip is really tiring but when you're sick, it's almost unbearable. I know because I travel with a mix of flu and allergies that was plaguing me for two weeks in Rio. I'm getting better now, I can barelly breath with all the congestion but my disposition is great! :D

No photos today because I don`t have a machine right now. Mine broke down in Rio and I left it there. I`ll see if it`s possible to borrow one or if worth it to buy a new one. But I need one for those stupid tourists, completly automatic. Because I love to take pictures, specially of scenery, but I`m not good in dealing with the machine.

Chegando a Terra Media / Arriving at Middle Earth

A new adventure starts. This trip was planned but its objective it’s a bit more than tourism. I’m here, where I like to call Middle Earth to try to start a new life. It worked out for so many people, why not me?

Nothing much to tell yet. It was a very long and tiring trip where looked like all the pre-schoolers in the world were coming back home from vacations. The weather is more or less, with a lot of clouds and the sun showing up once in a while but I like the cold temperatures. We arrived at Wellington around 11 AM in the morning of Monday, 27th July while the other side of the world was still enjoying their Sunday. We walked around the city a bit, eat lunch and come back to the apartment to unpack and sleep!

Now it’s 11:30 AM of Tuesday. Elida is at work, Bruno is sleeping, trying to build up his strength again and I’m here, at the computer, thinking. I feel little butterflies in my stomach with this adventure but I also wish really hard that it will work…

I'll be back to talk about the Sunday and the visit to the zoo, and I'll also go into details about the trip to Scotland, but right now it's easier to post when I don't have to right too much.

:( Fui, babei, me diverti e comprei alguns presentes. Valeu o gostinho...

Today, Monday, was a nice calm day, with a late breakfast, a lunch in town during Rudd's luch break and a visit I just HAD to do: IKEA! Brazil has a poor copy of this wonderful store and it's very sad that Latin American hadn't earn the right to one IKEA yet. :( I went to one of the 12 stores in the Netherlands, I drooled a bit, I bought some presents. That was nice...

I'm including a sort of P.S. here about IKEA: if it's our dream, it sure is the stuff of nightmares for husbands, boyfriends, fathers, etc. They only see uncountable boxes of things they have to put together or knick-knackers to take over the house. But everything good has a price, right? Here comes a lot of negotiations. :P

If you'll go and luck at my album using the link at the right side of this page, you'll be able to see Jasmijn's happiness at breakfast. I just can't describe it, you'll have to see the photo... :D

I'm happy because my pleasure in reading was rekindled in this trip. For the last years I was having problems in concentrating in a book. The wish adn the interest is there but I got lost early on. But during this trip I regain my pleasure in loosing myself with a good book and I already finished two! Ok, both of them were about cats, but I think it was a great victory. Let's keep going forward with a lot of new and wonderful worlds to be known through the magical pages of books. Because I'll be carry a lot of new books with me, back home (there's nothing like a friend working in a bookshop... :P ).
