Out There... Somewhere

Prince George

Prince George - we were guessing that was the paper mill in the distance, but we could be wrong.

Prince George - we were guessing that was the paper mill in the distance, but we could be wrong.

My plan to stop here was simply so I could say I've been here - the tourist guides for this area all look so pretty, and I'm guessing the town is not too bad.  Then you meet travellers on the way who talk about how horrid the place is.  You can't hear that and not want to see what it's all about.

Prince George is a crossroads to send people in all directions.  Coming from Prince Rupert, it is the obvious place to stop.

I think we visited on a good day - it was sunny, not too smoggy, and a thunderstorm in the afternoon came and washed the town very well.  The rivers look pretty.

But I think it was the view of industry that makes it kind of depressing.  Some of the hillsides have been denuded of trees and are eroding into the river and surrounds.  Most of the riverfront is taken up by rail yards and mills, and the empty spaces are filled with mosquitoes.  Even with the insect repellent which I happened to find at the bottom of my bag, it could only do so much against the hordes. And as I sit here typing I need to stop and scratch a little. Thank goodness for my trusty pot of tiger balm!

So, my recommendation: visit here if you like, but avoid 1st Avenue, and maybe get out of town - there is a lot of bushland outside of the town that could be worth exploring.
