My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

In one of the small homes that consist of two rooms with dirt floors, the newly made jewelry hangs to be dried. The room with a single window ventilates the freshly dipped lacquer beads. After they are dried, the women take the beads to various markets and prepare orders to be shipped to the US.

Many women in Uganda ( like the one pictured here) are creating a hopeful future for their children by making and selling necklaces to pay for a better education. Women make less than $10 a month and a good education can cost up to $350 a year. Women in this village have a partnership with a US based charity called BOH to help sell their products in the USA. The program is empowering women to sustain a business that not only supports their children's education but supports their needs as a family.

Many of the schools in Uganda are underfunded and in desperate need to accommodate the growing number of children. Both private and public schools are in need of financial support to give their kids the best chance at an education. This school near Jinja was a private school that met us with an infectious curiosity, open arms, lively song, and inspiring dance. Their hope is inspire visitors to believe in them and support the future of their education. A majority of the kids at this school are orphans with little or no financial support. The teachers and community are their hope at a better future.
