Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle

Wednesday morning, after breakfast and packing, I brought my clothes to an incredibly depressing laundromat near the train station and washed them (see http://www.flickr.com/photos/annefreiermuth/2527987449/in/set-72157605049990302/)

Then I took a nearly 5 hour train journey to Füssen in Germany via Munich, or München. Füssen is the closest town to the Neuschwanstein Castle, the famous castle built by mad King Ludwig II, which Walt Disney based the Disney castle on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuschwanstein. It´s right near the Austrian border.

After finding the hostel and putting down my stuff, I went to find some dinner and walk around the cute little town. It's apparently Volkfest in Füseen right now, so there was a group of people in Bavarian outfits (maye 50 people altogether) getting ready to parade down the streets. It so happened that I saw them in the main square, then they paraded the street next to the restaurant where I ate dinner.

Thursday morning I woke up and had an actual egg with breakfast (!) then headed up to the Neuschwanstein Castle with the rest of the tourists who came from Füssen, Reutte, and Munich. It was what you'd expect, and I enjoyed it despite the persistent rain.

Most of the stores and restaurants in Füssen were closed for Corpus Christi Day (Fronleichnam), which I only learned the next day fro, the hostel roommate that it was some holiday; I had to look it up via Google. So I had a fairly mediocore dinner at San Marco. It's surprisingly to see how much the Germans and Austrians love Italian culture; there are commonly Italian clothing shops and resturants, apparently even bad ones are accepted.

Despite all the many shops selling traditional German/Austrian clothing, I only saw one person actually wearing it on the way walking down from Neuschwanstein Castle. But I did see many men wearing the alpine hats with little feathers.
