The fragile geothermal areas near Hveragerði are being exploited to produce electricity at the Hellisheiði power station.

The fragility of Iceland’s unique ecosystems is reflected in the delicate and vulnerable flowers seen all across the country.

The power station continues to expand, largely to fulfill the ferocious energy demands of aluminum smelters like the one being built on this site by the American company Century Aluminum.
