Discovering Ston
CROATIA | Friday, 14 March 2008 | Views [102]
We continued our trip to north and we stop when night was arriving in Ston Mali after driving along a winding road surrounded by water where plenty of mussels and oysters beds could be seen.
We tried to find accomodation in a hotel there. It looked like an old aristocratic building which undoubtely knew past glories but it still looked ellegant.
A middle aged man dressed as a butler received us and geve us the keys to visit the room he was offering.
We went upstairs to visit it and when going back downstairs he was waiting us with a silver tray and two "shots" of local liquor.
That was wonderful! We haven't even confirm him if we would stay there or not and he was welcoming us in such a way!
In fact, we didn't stay there because we founded the price a bit high for our budget but we were really impressed by this welcome in Croatia without knowing even where we were, as we still hadn't a road map.
We walked around the little village for some minutes for discovering, after going through a wall that seemed from medieval ages, three or four other ellegant buildings like the hotel we visited and some restaurants starting to prepare their dishes.
We continued driving up to Ston Town. We parked there a walked around the little town. As it was night, we could discovered some kind of medieval walls around the town. We decided so stay there for that night so we went for accomodation.
While trying to approach to Hrvrastki (Croatian language)reading the menu in front of a restaurant, the waiter came to us to explain that they prepared delicious "rissottos" and sea food dishes.
We asked him if he knew about a place for accomodation and he did all for us. He was Renato and he introduced us to Antonio, the owner of Sorgo Restaurant.
They showed us a one bedroom apartment nearby the restaurant at a very good price and we took it.
Of course, while we were closing the treat, they invited us with local liquor "shots".
We walked around the village before going for dinner and we learned our first word in Hrsvrastki: "pivo"...even more...Karlovacko Pivo. The local beer. We kenew the world pivo from Russia and Slovenia (where we had been formerly) so it was a nice surprise to discover that the forst word was not completely unknown for us.
We had a wonderful dinner with oysters and delicious rissotto at Sorgo Restaurant...but even more wonderful was the after-dinner chat we had with Antonio and Renato at our table...drinking, how not local liquor "shots". We knew that Sorgo family ruled -among other families- the Dubrovnik Republic, in times it was independant (around XV Century), and Antonio descends from this family. Also the family blossom is exhibited inside the restaurant.
There are some photos fron Ston in an album in this journal.
