My Scholarship entry - African Safari

On our first day in Kenya, my family and I visited a Maasai village within the Porini Amboseli Conservancy. The tribe leader was explaining that they make their huts out of cow dung, sticks, mud and grass, when I turned and saw this brilliant shot. A little Maasai girl was peering out of her hut and looking straight at me.

This is 'Katrina', a female Sykes Monkey at the Gede Ruins in Malindi, Kenya. Malindi is a coastal town and used to be my Grandpa's favourite spot when he lived there in 1953-1958.
This shot was taken while Katrina was patiently waiting for a banana from our tour guide and a few seconds before she leapt onto my back at his prompt.

Seeing this Maasai village was astounding; the colours, the smells, the atmosphere, and the animals were wonderful. The Maasai women are incredibly impressive and having managed to capture their fierce expressions in several other photos; I was delighted to get this shot when they all broke into laughter at the children dancing. The Maasai lifestyle is something to be admired; the way they live off the land inspires me to get back in touch with nature. The women in this photo hand made some of the jewelery we bought at the Porini Camp and the proceeds go straight into conserving the land and wildlife.
