Indonesia | Saturday, March 1, 2014 | 3 photos

Ingredients
about 1? cup/200 g green beans, cleaned, trimmed and cut into matchstick-sized pieces
about 3 cups/200 g pointed cabbage, shredded
about 1½ cup/100 g bean sprouts
about ½ cup/100 g tofu, cut into small cubes
about ½ cup/100 g tempeh, cut into little cubes
2 eggs, hard-boiled and sliced into quarters
1 sachet lontong, cooked according to package directions and cut into small cubes
about ? cup/150 ml satay sauce
about ½ cup/50 g) crispy fried onions

How to prepare this recipe
Bring a large pot of water to the boil and cook the green beans until just cooked but still firm to the bite. This should take about 6 minutes. After 4 minutes of cooking, add the pointed ??cabbage and broccoli. Add the bean sprouts 30 seconds before the end of the cooking time. Pour off the cooking water and drain the vegetables well.

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a frying pan and fry the tofu cubes until golden. Drain on kitchen paper. Bake the cubes of tempeh in the same pan until brown and crispy. Drain on clean kitchen paper.

Arrange the cooked vegetables on a large serving platter. Scatter the tofu and the tempeh cubes over the vegetables and arrange the eggs and diced lontong on top. Heat the peanut sauce and drizzle the sauce over the vegetables. Finally, sprinkle fried onions on top. Serve the gado gado immediately.

The story behind this recipe
This gado-gado i made first time when i was in Poland, one month ago. Because i had internship for about 2 months in Lodz, Polandia and i did work as a volunteer at that time. It was one of the greatest time in my life. I had chance to spend one week with host family in Poland. I live with Polish young couple and their names are Emily and Mariusz. They are really great family. Luckyly, they told me that they just came back from Indonesia for holiday. So, it's good they have a lot of knowledges about my country so it's just like cross-cultural understanding between me (INDONESIA) and them (POLAND). They told me they really love Asia since Asia is totally different with Poland. They like spicy foods (in Asia we eat A LOT of spicy and it is really really hot :)) and also, they love rice haha so, spending holiday in Asia is absolutely the best choice for them because in Asia especially my country, Indonesia, we eat a lot of spicy and also rice. Sometimes, in Indonesia we eat rice 3 times a day. Amazing, right? :D It's because Indonesia is full of rice fields :) And even international brand like McD and KFC change their main menu from fries into rice :) it's really unique fact. Because i think only in Indonesia you can find KFC and McD with rice in their main menu. So, they started to tell their story when they were in Indonesia. The places, beautiful nature, culinary, foods, rice, chili, and so on. They bought a lot of chilies from Asia and they told me that they have tried one of most popular Asia's cuisine name gado-gado. And they asked me to cook them gado-gado haha it was really great time because in Poland it's really hard to find some of gado-gado's ingredients so we changed some of the original ingredients but you know what? IT'S STILL DELICIOUS and i could say that is the most delicious gado - gado i ever eat (maybe because this time it is made by myself) ;P
